Practice Wire?

Is that an endorsement?

Yeah.

I'm in the, if you're going to spend $ at all on wire...

Camp.

But there's people here who anneal wire other ways.

Speaking of Oklahoma!

My Wal-Mart plants came from a nursery in Oklahoma.....

I would try to "know a guy" there.

The "best" copper wire for bonsai is Jim Gremel's. He prices his wire by weight. Adams prices his by the foot. I'm sure the smart folks around here could figure out whose wire is the cheapest...

When you buy from Gremel, his spools are larger. Both in being a physically larger spool, and each spool has more in it than an Adams spool. But it costs more.

I use a lot of copper, so I like having the larger spools. But, if you don't use a lot, Adams wire would mean you can have some copper on hand without having a lot of money tied up in your copper inventory.

Both sell good wire. They both sell good trees, too!

seriously though, if you want to anneal copper wire, consider making a rocket stove.

I don't have plans, but the basic principle is to create a system that pulls oxygen through and creates LOTS of heat. I have done it using bricks, cinderblocks and various cans. If you make a gassifier, you can make biochar in the process of annealing wire, while also burning off the smoke and not getting the local EMS called to your house.

Word of caution, you should never anneal copper inside your home, it releases some horrible toxins. It should be done outside in a very well ventilated area and a ask should be worn. I've switched from a BBQ to a chiminea. The stuff I anneal is just for my rough stock trees, it's still not easy to work with. I've bought from Julian Adams, it's fine wire.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm just going to go with the starter set to get a feel for it. Not sure I'm ready to anneal yet.
