OUTDOOR PROPOGATION USING DIFFERENT HYDROPONIC GROWING MEDIA

Awesome!!! 18 day results w/ the Green Japanese Maple.

Ok,maybe not essential, although the seedlings outside are consideralble bigger now outside…so another crop in the works for the aero cloner.

I am going to neglect these little dudes and leave in the cloner till’ I start to see the abundant tertiary roots sprouting from the existing roots…….will already have the root bulk to absorb mass bio-stimulants and calcium!!!!
Can make a huge,Huge differance.

I removed the safety tap-root on the ones that were further ahead yet.

I love the aero method because absolutely no shock from adverse humidity change and such from any tranplant or humidity domes.
About a 60% success rate ……though this will only improve.

Chaenomeles Seedling Air -Layers-14 days!!!

I do not see reason to grow these just for flowering cuttings. They are beautiful up until the time before a seedling flowers……These are variable seedlings……Another batch stratifying.

Do you think that grow wool material you are using would work for air layers on larger branches?

Definately…….actually a mini block would too……grow wool is a bit more baorbant ….would need to water daily though
I am gonna try that out next year. I’m wanting to get away from using spagnum. Those blocks seem pretty cool. Will be interesting to try next year!

Potted the zelkovas…( just a few)

I have lots of seeslings…..so made forest clumps and plan on layering in the small pots later in season( few weeks). They will then be nice and tight forest starters clumps style.
Some are more than 11 trees….others less.

More Green Japanese Maple clumps

Made a bunch more of these and spread them out for some sun.Have to keep under a bit of shelter or the leaves get tired.
These should perk up after some root growth.

so for the cuttings outside, do you just keep them in shade (indirect light) with no humidity dome till they root, then take them out to full sun? I only had luck with this with Ficus cuttings, trying out some trident as I am planning on trimming mine soon.

18 days chaenomeles seedling air-layers

Ok I like these.Nice thicker and radial root system.Right into some airy grow cubes in Rootpouch with rooting nutrient a couple weeks and then a grow formula. All ebb and flow hydro outside.

Have another 20 or so to finish and proceed with.

SOME SERIOUS AIR-PRUNING IN THE GRODAN MINI-BLOCKS

These are actually looking really great to me.The main reason for holding these till’ later in the season was so they would get much ,much rooting in the mini blocks.

I personally am confident these would be great in a colander full of akadama 1:1:1 mix.I would even up-pot the smaller 2” blocks into a 3” block before doing so and you will get MUCH NEEDED hydration in the core of the colander.
these absolutely need watering every day.
I would think that the Grow Wool would be great interlaced in the bonsai media also…to add a stable moisture saver that will never break down as it is made of basalt rock!!!
Does a fine job of adding moisture retention instead of wood chips or the like.

Lots of the smaller pines are actually quite tall. Not from over feeding though. Are quite limber and will take some initial wire quite nicely for some curves at the start.Amazing what a simple clump of 3 or 5 young JBP will do in making the spark of creation.Actually nice they are tall like this.

Getting lots of Zelkova Kabudachi

More on the way….around 120……Have hopes to do a quick air-layering before sale if enough time.At least on some of them, but they need to get a bit more hefty before I proceed.Hopefully be ready for September sale.
These would be of more value to get a clump of 7 or more trunks all air-layered together. Will be quite nice.If I let them grow another 3 weeks they will be done layering 3rd week of August and be sold in September.
This all could happen way sooner…we’ll see.
I pot up about 25 a day.

Euonymous Alatas & Siberian Elm from seed

So,I am thinking kabudachi since a bigger base achieved more quickly….especially the spindle tree.

Burning bush take 90 days cold treat ,but the elm need no treat and will sew tomorrow……seems a good indoor over winter grow idea with these too.
Euonymous clumps….. like 9 tree clumps will get a strong base……….hope for good seed……co2 will help too.

Siberian Elm Sprout from seed almost instantly!!!

Funny actually…the seed can be frozen for up to 15 yrs and still germinate just fine.

Pretteatment absolutely unessesary…..I soaked for a few hrs in kelp and they sprouted a day later…….I like to pre germinate so as to point the root down directly out the bottom of the 1.5” stonewool mini -block.

288 of these will be growing in a day or two……..

Now just need to find cool pictures of Siberian Elm bonsai.
I like their need for maximum sun exposure.

I want to get these a slow start so they get high brix and close internodes with very low branching.

RAFT STYLE BONSAI STARTER IDEA!!!

Ok so,I fogured if I cut a larger Grodan Mini-Block in half it would have the air-pruning attributes from the start like the small blocks do.
I used what I have on hand,the 3” mini-blocks of stonewool……
Some will be put outside today and some brought in the tent. The elms grow so fast that outside should be fine.I believe the Siberian Elm are known to grow right until frost( which is why they get the bad rap in the landscape going into winter with weak branches).

So the idea is plant the seed into the shallow 3” mini block of stonewool and as it sprouts ,guide it along its way unto any desired Raft or Sinuous bonsai style shape I desire.
I always loved raft…….If these get large it is quite feasable to just lay down another shallow block side by side and let another trunk section root into it by notching the cambium.

I will experiment different species……elm, hedge maple( if can get good germination) and coreana hornbeam.
The hedge maple are done pre treatment,so I will lay the seed into orchid spahgnum and sew the visibly rooting seed.
The siberian elm seed roots in a day or two from moisture contact………so these are the first two subjects I will proceed with today.

Perhaps proceeding with 4”-6” shallow modified blocks would be better…….could get a few layers from a 6” block!!!

this is fun!

36 done….Siberian Elm

Seems nothing is stopping these. Is beneficial( if not time consuming) to sprout seed initially befor sewing so to point root downword.Although if I can determine which end of seed the root protrudes ,I can plant accordingly such as is possible with zelkova seed by planting pointed end down.

I’m stoked for these…….. going to need japanese bettle netting today…….. the things just bug me!!!!🤔😆

Excited to see this! Seems cool! I’m sure you will have good success!
yes, thanks.I am excited for the Siberian Elm.
It is quite exciting to see them two days later poking out of the stonewool.Outdoor ebb& flo is great fun.The rain water is great as a pure water source.Almost deionized as far as ppm goes.
So into this. Not too far into the future I am planning a structure build in the yard to have a completely automated system…..dosers and everything if possible and room to grow all winter too.

These are definately considered weeds in all of the USA I believe, but it is still very rewarding as they thrive in all the sun one can give and are very, very vigorous all through the grow season.

They are on an high amino acid/extra calcium and bio-stimulant diet right from germination as the roots will develop extra calcium ion channels from the two select aminos I use…….which is very unusual as in nature this is non existant.
My one test subject started to attain very thick leaves with substance which is a good sign of high brix content( suger).
So these will be even better…….actually will promote slower growth so rooting is more abundant and these will be a managable size for sale if anyone is interested by Autumn.

Seems an Autumn show could be attainable
I just searched the i ternet for possibilities.
