OUTDOOR PROPOGATION USING DIFFERENT HYDROPONIC GROWING MEDIA

@cmeg1 you may have mentioned this earlier, but what is your plan/timeline for the seedlings in the trays? Will you pot them up individually this season or leave them to grow together in the trays for a full season? I’m planning to germinate a few hundred JM and tridents in spring (in Southern Hemisphere) and am trying to decide the most effective utilisation of my available growing space

Do you see a difference in branch extension outdoors vs indoors?
Extension is always more outside for the most part.......except for maybe small deciduous whips will extend much faster in the co2 tent indoors.
Pines always stunt a bit indoors.......but make extremely healthy starters nontheless.
You put them outside and they explode into growth......literally in days will double in size.

for instance a Pine from last season.............indoors...........outside @7 days,@13 days,@27 days!!!
check the increase.

If outdoors the grow wool is great.......tridents look a bit weird, but always seem that way as I usually do not grow them.Japanese maple look fantastic for me this way........need good hydro nutrient for the grow wool.....ph’d and all or they die.
They will air prune nice if in a mesh tray as I use.
Water about once a week or less.
Can leave all season and maybe even possible cutting of side roots with scissors right in the wool......almost like preparing a ground tree for lifting the season before lol.

I am currently plucking out and proceeding with seedling girdling possibilites in the aeroponic cloner indoors today.

Wow! So vigorous! So those are just starting their second year?

This should be cool.......aeroponic seedling girdling tech!!!

I have been told this may not be worth the trouble,But I believe it to increase the quality of a young seedling.
Gets rid of any tap and roots quite quickly......Hornbeams looked fantastic last season......I imagine the zelkove root incredibly quick..........Not sure of maples......we’ll see.

The seedlings are out in full sun and given a spray of kelp....motherplant prep since sprouting.
I will girdle at the end of the day so they are pumped sufficiently after a full day of photosynthesis.I also leave roots on these in the cloner so the are more turgid and stable.......then they will callous and push roots at the girdle in a couple weeks.
Japanese maples look fantastic along with the zelkova. The tridents look a bit finiky, but ok nontheless.
Elms are sooo greedy they always get a bit of chlorosis with low ec feeding( motherplant prep).
Also a bit of black spot on the chinese elms, but they should pull out of it.

Coreana Hornbeam last season.

If these rooted from a girdle so well. The zelkova will root half the time!!!

Also last season there was no motherplant prep involved.......although co2 was involved.......we’ll see the results.

Whatever has good results will be potted in the stonewool in mesh pots and put into a fully automated ebb and flo hydro setup I’m currently building in a 3x3 tent to grow on a bit and will be sold on the website.

I'm itchin to see those acer campestre take off. None of my seedlings sprouted and all my cuttings failed but I have my mind set on an Acer campestre army to join my plant collection 😂

Me too.The flat I planted last week outside has about 7 poppin’ up.
I imagine they will all sprout.

WOW….Tridents and elms callousing in just 36 hrs!!!

These should root then.Japanese maples barely just starting.
Now that is fast!!!

Pump cycling @ 2 min on 10 min off.
Water at 70f
Humidity between 60-75% in the room……….ambient temperature about 68f by means of air conditioner.

As per the recipe…..the hormex and photosynthesis plus are actually 3ml & 12 ml respectively.

Your cuts are so clean! I’m a jeweler/engraver and am scratching my head on how your cuts are so clean. I’ve never tried. But those are looking fantastic! You got that dialed in! Do you use any magnification?

Thanks!
An exacto knife is fine and just roll on your index finger and do a slice……quite quick really.
Although I have guitar callous on left hand fingertips from years of classical guitar lol.
Exacto’s way better then little razor blades.

Japanese maples are callousing now at 48 hrs…..wow.
I post pics tomorrow

Nubs in 36 hrs 😄
Expecting roots in about 4 days……faster for sure.
Low ec mother feed is key…..like .4 or .5
The stonewool would get wet from rain and go unwatered for more than a week sometimes……..very low ec and lots of bio stimulants.

This girdle technique you are doing is interesting. You are essentially making "seedling air layers" to improve the roots in a similar fashion to the seedling cutting technique for pines? It looks like you started the girdle outdoors and then moved them in doors to your propagation room? Have you tried this method completely outdoors? I'd like to try this with some maple seedings for myself next year but I would have to do it completely outdoors.

Yes I start the seedlings in growool from Grodan stonewool……ringbark immediately before sticking in cloner after a 4 hr hydration soak in a cup of resevoir nutrient.

If outdoors just ringbark when big enough and then bury in some stonewool around the ringbark/groundlayer.

If growing in stonewool you will need some hydro nutrient and correct ph for sure.

Would you recommend the same nutrient formula as the one you listed above, or could I just use Clonex clone solution at pH 5.5 for example?
