Was it originally planted on a tile? That's a nice base and hardly any large roots.

It thought it was nifty too. No optical illusion and no board,tile, or nails, ever. Kinda blows a hole in the Ebihara stuff. I personally think he with held some information on his process and secretly laughs at us trying to emulate his trees.
 
Thanks for the lessons with great photos John. Something that we can all use with various trees. I have a couple that I want to chop, I just need to get up enough guts

Cool sumo tree. The only I see that can be an issue is the internode on the branch seems long for the tree with a fat base. That probably won't be your second trunk.

There are thee nodees on the new leader, too late now, lol, just have to see how it goes. Hopefully I won'the be making lemonade.
