Non Bonsai tools and stuff for Bonsai

Reasonable priced work/ repotting tub or grow out planter
Slightly smaller than the pond liners I buy from Lowes, but a few bucks cheaper... may have to go take a look and see how much sturdier it is to see if it is worth changing. Tractor Supply is a little further away from my house, but I have to go soon to get some chicken feed to my lawn leveling ordeal this spring.

I’m in the hunt . Looking to create a Anderson flat type container . One there not available to me . And there more flimsy than I would like . Prefer something rectangular for max use of space . Starting to think old school wood box may be best option

You can make your own if you know a little woodworking. On the cheap side you can use 6"x6' cedar picket for the sides, and either 2x4 cedar or PVC pipe cut in quarters for the corners, then use one of the below options as the bottom. There are cheaper plastic options, but the items below can be reused for ever... since they are 304 stainless. All you would need to do is make a new box in the even that it gets too damaged by a fast growing tree.

Or you can by actual lumber as tall as you want your sides (4, 6, 8, 12") and use for the sides.
Cedar

I am making some this weekend if I get some free time. Some weird ones for the BC's too if I get the material in on time

Thanks I appreciate the info . Essentially what I was planning . I have built boxes for collected trees . Have used scrap wood . Pallets for example . But went to 1 x6 cedar fence board are my go to . Even rip them length wise to make shallow boxes . 3 inch high . But I like your pvc idea . For corners . Also been thinking about trying ceramic
Flooring tiles . For lasting and attractive . Plus light weight . Appreciate it you have idea to stick them together at the corners . But I really like your stainless screen . I have used galvanized . But been looking for something like that . Lots of advantages to wood . So easy to secure trees and tie downs

The bus tubs work well for me. $7.50 each.

I’m going to try some . What do you do for drainage . I’m thinking of large area of screen like a Anderson flat . Concerned about making them to flimsy to move stuff around . One of my things is I . Move trees a fair bit . Portable benches chasing the sun .

I just drilled a bunch of holes.

I've been forgetting to post this one. This are my To-Go scissors for root work on repotting. I was using my Joshua Roth shears that one of the tips chipped off and decided to give my SOD scissors a try, there's no going back to the small ones.

Kind of related- hedge clippers work great for cutting greenhouse panels. Tried a razor blade on a powered multi-tool, tin snips, razorblades, and metal blades on a jig saw. Hedge clippers work the best.

You could cut larger holes leaving wider spaces between them for rigidity, then glue a hardware cloth screen in the bottom. You could potentially remove upwards of 2/3 of the material in the bottom without compromising the integrity of the tub IF you do it in the right pattern.

My quest continues . Having failed to find a Anderson tray supplier in Canada . With stock . My search continues . For grow out containers . Having trouble seeing the downside of these . There restaurant steam pans . Having somewhat limited full sun . Area . I prefer square / rectangle max use of space . Non corroding stainless steel . Sturdier for moving around than plastic . Multiple sizes and depths avail 😎😎😎😎😎

They should be good to use. Cost is the issue for me.

You might be able to find vermicomposter trays (worm compost). The square ones might actually be Anderson flats.

Cost is always a issue for me . But you must consider I have different variables than you guys . One the Canadian dollar is worth Approximately 75 cents American . So add that to the equation. 2 shipping international is crazy since Covid . So need to source as much local as I can . So perspective . Same store your bus tubs are 8.99 $ the steam trays are 5.99 to 21.99 depending on size . The ones I show in the pic are 10.99 and 12.99 . So I think that’s reasonable . 10.99 is 12x14 x2.5 in inches . My concern is the quality of the stainless . Or are they just coated . Hence when I drill holes . Will they start to rust . But I think there a good option for smaller than a tub . I like the multiple depths . 2.5 and 4 and 6 inches deep . Hard to get that shallow and stiff . When I consider cost I look at it from the perspective . In general I put aside some hobby money each pay check . If I want something expensive it has to come out of that budget . So I’m as frugal as I can be so the budget goes farther .

I’m not aware what your talking about . Do you have a pic . At one time I had used some containers . That grocery store grapes are shipped in . Styrofoam about 16x16x4 bottom full of holes . They stand up pretty good . For a few years depending on how much you move them . Not sure about anywhere else . But here the stores are limited how much styrofoam they can dispose of in the garbage . They are pretty happy to give them away 😎😎😎👍👍👍👍

Most Chinese restaurant trays are cheap 304 stainless. Used as planting trays they will rust but not to the point where they are not useable in your lifetime. The rust is just cosmetic.

Thanks my understanding is 18/8 and 304 are the same product so you have used this . Not concerned about a little rust just don’t want fert and water to eat them
