Minimum Requirements

Don't blame Smoke exclusively for the show me your trees demands, I used to do that a lot years ago, and I mean years ago, and there is a reason. Number one reason is to see the development on trees. I always thought and I still think, having experienced opinion on a tree surpasses guessing. Then we get the occasional troll who has nothing but a bit of knowledge to beat you over the head with and an attitude the makes you afraid to question them.

Why did you or anyone else come to this forum, to show off or to learn something? We have had people come along boasting many things but showing nothing, I used to go after those individuals, we used to call the lot'a smoke no fire bonsai club. I found the more you pushed to get photos of trees the more you found just how void of knowledge some people were about those things they boast they can do. There is an axiom that states: With great claims comes the necessity for great evidence.

You wrote: This isn't an art gallery, it's an internet forum. This assumes you are correct doesn't it? In truth it is both. You cannot engage in the pursuit of bonsai without showing it off, the beauty of the tree is one thing the beauty of the work is an other. That is what this forum has become. For better or worse this is arguably the best bonsai forum on the NET, if you don't think so tell me of one better.
I mean i get that but the problem comes when you really do have someone thats new and trying to get a start. I have 4 trees right now. Should i go do out of season work and harm the tree just because i haven't updated a topic in awhile? We arnt all bad.

Thank you Vance for joining the discussion. It is interesting to read. I dont so much disagree with anything you've written. I did want to answer those two questions though.
1) I came here to learn. I suppose if I ever get good I may want to show off, I don't know.
2) This is in fact the best forum I've found at present. I love this place. I hope you didn't take my comments as a criticism on what you guys have built here at BNut.

I was just trying to speak up that I don't want to feel that moving forward I (we) have to be held to all manner of documentational requirements. I naturally don't take as many pics of trees as most folks here, and now maybe that's just because I have nothing worth photographing. I just don't want to feel like I better improve or shut myself up and leave. But yes I feel like people should want to share their successes, after all they should be proud of it. I just don't think it should be a mandate.

But then again, I acknowledged I don't think originally I was one of the targets since I've been here all of 2 months. I generally shut the hell up when it comes to advising others because I don't know enough to give advice. I just as a new member want to feel welcome. That's all.

This has been on my mind recently.

I think you have a thread where you mentioned you appreciated the advice, which was good, but went a different way. The tree turned out great.

Sometimes there are many many good options.

I used some advice for the direction of my best spruce, because I needed it.

The thing about these pieces of advice is I think we both acted on them some year or more later. We ALWAYS have more time!

Besides...

This whole, cut branch A and Branch b to a half inch......
Is this horticulture advice?
Or design advice?

Sorce

Advice from the Internet, design or horticultural, no matter who it comes from or how good they are nobody knows our trees like we do. The full history of care and climate, the real 3D view, the plan, the vision, long term, short term...not following advice or attempting to debate it is nowhere near the same thing as ignoring it. Vance mentioned being here to either show off or learn. That’s too limiting, how about just being a person amidst a group of people here to shoot the shit about trees and see where it goes. Hear other people’s thoughts, share our own.

Here’s a poll for you, pick a letter or add a new one if you like but we might run out of letter if everyone does that.

Why do you post a tree?
A- show off B- seek advice C- teach others. D - Umm, maybe a bit of all of the above and we’re just a bunch of loonies who like talking about little trees for some reason.

E-Progress journal for one’s own self.

If you think this forum is bad just go check out the Reddit bonsai forum. Its full of sticks in pots posted by people who are mortally wounded by any criticism.
Lol. I am on another forum where someone was actually stating he was not interested in doing bonsai and just wanted to be there to get advice on how to keep plants alive..

Guy posts complaining novices don't post their trees so it should be compulsory, novice posts a 3 year progression. Guy completely shits on the novices tree without realising he has completed a massive self own in only 2 posts. Irony huh

7 posts. What the hell have you contributed?

It seems to me that it would be a good move to add some minimum requirements to BonsaiNUT. After three years of joining, one would have to provide an article about a tree that they have taken from nothing to something. Then once a year thereafter. A form of giving back. A notice would appear on your avatar 30 days before it's due. The article would require pictures of the before and pictures moving forward. I am bored as a reader and viewer of far too many people here that never contribute anything and only piss up other peoples threads with politics and offensive language and links to stupid songs.

This place needs a house cleaning and far too many people use this as their personal social forum and totally forget about bonsai. I love the light moderation policy, but some of this crap goes on far too long. Start removing the posts from a thread that have nothing to do with the thread and this place can get back on track, and those that do it would get it. Let it go and the monkeys take over the asylum.

Also, I was trying to just reply to that post asking for advice, but I accidentally reposted it? i tried to delete it, but not sure how yet lol

......sorry son, that's just the way it's gonna be.....

Gotta be honest... B'nut IS SOCIAL MEDIA! I come here mainly for the bonsai... BUT... I also come here for the camaraderie that's developed over a decade of interacting with people having a similar passion to mine. If I can't goof around periodically and be light hearted with these people that I've known on line and in person for going on a decade or longer... hmmmm... not sure if I'll be stopping in so much going forward. Fwiw, I post this knowing that I've got threads here dating back over 10 years, and some contain progressions almost almost as old and still updated periodically, so I've certainly dedicated as much of my personal time as anyone else to make this place successful and generally enjoyable to visit.

Thank you so much!! I'm very excited tp start this journey, I've always loved to concept of bonsai, but this opportunity to learn just fell into my lap and was way top good to pass up! I hope to eventually be able to pass on a bonsai I started all on my own to my kids when I'm old, and teach them enough to for them to be able to keep it alive and thriving lol, that may be a pipe dream right now since I literally just have 3 little boxwoods in pots, but I'm so excited to undertake this adventure and learn as much as I can along the way!!
