Minimum Requirements

Gotta be honest... B'nut IS SOCIAL MEDIA! I come here mainly for the bonsai... BUT... I also come here for the camaraderie that's developed over a decade of interacting with people having a similar passion to mine. If I can't goof around periodically and be light hearted with these people that I've known on line and in person for going on a decade or longer... hmmmm... not sure if I'll be stopping in so much going forward. Fwiw, I post this knowing that I've got threads here dating back over 10 years, and some contain progressions almost almost as old and still updated periodically, so I've certainly dedicated as much of my personal time as anyone else to make this place successful and generally enjoyable to visit.

I certainly would not want you to stop posting on my account. In fact, I would gladly desist from posting if it meant that you would continue.

No! You misunderstand, Lance... I'm with you in occasionally posting the humorous or off color comment or meme to share a smile among friends... you included! You gotta keep being you, posting those memes in one thread while showing us how to grow JBP and A. palmatums in the Great White North!!

Advice from the Internet, design or horticultural, no matter who it comes from or how good they are nobody knows our trees like we do. The full history of care and climate, the real 3D view, the plan, the vision, long term, short term...not following advice or attempting to debate it is nowhere near the same thing as ignoring it. Vance mentioned being here to either show off or learn. That’s too limiting, how about just being a person amidst a group of people here to shoot the shit about trees and see where it goes. Hear other people’s thoughts, share our own.

Here’s a poll for you, pick a letter or add a new one if you like but we might run out of letter if everyone does that.

Why do you post a tree?
A- show off B- seek advice C- teach others. D - Umm, maybe a bit of all of the above and we’re just a bunch of loonies who like talking about little trees for some reason.
I post pictures when I think I have something worth posting, or as a point to be proved to someone on the forum, or because I want to post the tree because someone told me I cound not make a bonsai our of it.

Who’s Ryan Neil?

Lives down the street. Doesn't say much, kinda keeps to himself. Works for the sanitation department if what I hear is correct. Not a bad guy, as far as I've seen, but some of the neighbors say he has some sort of a record or reputation or some-such regarding time spent in foreign matters overseas. Keeps pigeons, I think, but some say he doesn't keep their cages very clean, and they don't look well-fed during the winter months, since he merely feeds them cuttings off some weird little trees he grows for that purpose.

......sorry son, that's just the way it's gonna be.....

Hey, LanceMac10 !!! I'm just some old fart without a great deal of on-line/digital/IA savvy, so my efforts to post a reply here to your much-appreciated musical offerings, particularly my offering - in reply - of the YouTube capture of Freddy King's small-club capture of "Have You Ever Loved a Woman", proved beyond my meager capabilities, but maybe you could insert it somehow on my behalf ....

Users of this forum may have different reasons to be here not just to share their sticks or bonsai
- green fingers of different sort searching for cross border information - thinking out of box. I do visit forum dealing with cannabis just to mention one of them - diseases, fertilisation, etc... great sorce of information for enthusiast like me.
- vendors
- students writing thesis about social media...

and some other more and/or less "friendly" users.

At the end of the day it is a traffic. Ignore button is a help. A choice is a freedom. Freedom is ... ( not sure about this one - spent too much time in the Eastern block 👮‍♂️ )

Damn that's some yano!

Sorce

Finally someone came close to saying it. Large ego's, general puffery, and serious social media addiction are what powers this site.

This is the kind of reply generally forwarded by someone who has a Large ego with general puffer and serious social media addiction masquerading as a practitioner of bonsai on a higher level. Being unable to formulate any original ideas or produce any trees capable of standing on their own on a national stage they seek to demean those who can. What powers this site is for the most part a serious regard for bonsai and the people who grow them that don't get the kind of recognition their skill deserves.

Merely making a social observation. I've made no claims to producing serious bonsai, nor was I belittling any one particular individual.

@Smoke, if you want something to grow such as greater participation then treat it with respect and some sympathy for how you and your trees were in the early days. You have shared some of these pics so I know that you still remember the type of trees that you worked back then.

Your hostile, sarcastic, aggressive and non supportive posts wrapped up & justified as 'honesty' serves to suppress and stymie the sharing you seek. As proof you need not look any further of page 1 of this thread where someone tried to show a young forest and you sarcastically put their contribution down. Maybe your approach is part of the problem, not the solution?

I am now off to update a thread with photos of a few trees. Pity you can't see them as you have half the forum who won't tolerate your attitude on ignore! Oh the irony!

I was once on a flight home from an international surf destination. Some lowlife had their child running rampant around the plane. I did the wrong thing and snapped at the parents....”I wouldn’t expect this type of behaviour from a surfer!” The stereotype of being so chilled out, peaceful, one with nature.....but its dog eat dog out in them waves. Human nature is a bitch. Look at so many peoples behaviour here. But I’m guilty myself, we all need to chill out

To add a few quotes that have come to mind during a review of this thread, quotes from the small book, To Believe in Man, by one of my favorite poets, Joseph Pintauro:

"We must become new men or be satisfied as we are ...
either way we risk tragedy."

and

"Maybe we are less than our dreams would make us,
but that less is more than some gods would dream of."

And in other news I put my trees to bed today. I know that it is early but recent drastically low night time temperatures worry me. Lost two JM a couple of years ago to freezing.
I assume that we are all here for fun and that everyone's opinion matters. If someone follows someone else's opinion or not it should not be that big of a deal. So, why so serious?

Opinions are welcome on my over wintering solution but I may or may not use all of the advice received.
Thanks
