Korean Hornbeam no. 1

you dont have to wait until spring to do wiring and/or pruning

this one had its first wiring in Dec, the same year I bought it. and developed very quickly after that

same with this one, I set the tone for the tree within the first few months of growing these branches

deciduous trees are prized on their winter images, you set the bones early and plan for your future winter image. thats what its all about. a good winter image.

true perhaps when leaves fall , I will have to
put in unheated garage anyway because shallow pot this winter once it gets a few nights with frost

If was mine I would clean up the soil surface and slip it into a training pot, and begin setting the bones for its future. development will be laboured in this pot, but in a training pot you could have a fairly decent image in 2-3 years.

Thanks but I’m keeping it in the pot. Soil surface is fine just a layer of moss.

Okay so I cut that straight apex off and reduced height

I’m afraid I will need a bigger pot next year to develop the new top more. But I have an light blue rectangle for it. This pot is gorgeous I will always have it in my collection, just not with this tree. I think maybe one day it can come back to this pot. Making a mature decision for what is best rather than my feelings to this pot

Changed the character of the tree completely, IMHO...

So this was left to grow long pretty much entire season , and some of branches will need to be cut back .. as you can see by the red line .. this is where I cut back to.. that bud is. Ow a smaller branch which I will position to be new leader to continue the taper. The straight section did not offer interest or taper.

I would rate it a success as well! Hoping to get my two hornbeams this nice in a few years...
