Aha, I can see your point, especially the second picture shows some strong and thick roots. So they DO thicken very well, even in a smaller pot - in which case the front roots will get thicker sooner or later. So, no need to worrry about them, they will get there soon enough.

So, here is where growing the roots in tubes comes into play...you just grow the ones that need to be grown out while the others reamain contained. Kinda clever really.

Nice tree Kong.

Jason

You are right, this is a great way to be selective with each root.

While we are on this root thing. By the way critiques are encouraged. Seeing many ficus mature in our area esp. neriifolia, a problem manifests esp. with aerial roots. We fight to get them to intiate but they will in time over-take the trunk in girth. I have seen many trees grow out of control and completly loose scale because of this aggresive growth left unrestricted. Ficus are not as easy as people think.

I selected a tree out of my collection that some of you have seen before. My mentor handed me a cutting off his famous tree and said "grow this into something you vision, don't copy mine" So here you have it.
ht. 34 inches
girth 11.5 inches
age 25-30 range

Very nice tree Kong. I am especially taken with the quote, "grow this into something you vision, don't copy mine" .

Had you copied what would it have looked like? Is yours vastly different?

I like the roots just the way they are. I feel they are proportionate with the tree.

Cheers, Al

Fun thread to read, I applauad your's and Walters efforts on the trees, each has thier own merit indeed. Good to see it stay good spirited as well.

Going back to the questions on your tree KK, not an insult or to be viewed as a skeptic, but would you start a thread on how you worked this tree, many of us have these and would love to head towards your results.

Thanks to all that participated here, good thread.

Since you live close to the ocean, you must have been inspired by this guy.

Maybe sometime Bill but there in really no mystery to it. The right rock, the right plant species, do at least 3 examples and one will shine over the others, a little luck and most important, have a goal in mine as far as design, form, size and all that stuff. I copied or was trying to duplicate a root over the rock I saw in a trade photo book from Japan. I didn't even know what species this thing was because it was in Japanese. It turned out to be a maple defoliated. It had a cool design so I took a ficus seedling and stuck it on a rock, used this picture for a model and you know the rest of the story.

KK not knocking on your tree as it is a beautiful ficus. However, your rules turned this into a girly fight if you know what im saying? It kinda reminded me of my street racing days, when I was kicking everybodys butt & every weekend there would be a new rule like, you have to start in second gear or you cant let air out of your tires & on & on, it finally got so bad that I might as well have got out my sneakers & ran against them!
Its like calling a man out to fight but saying, you cant hit me in the face or you have to tie one hand behind your back or ahh you get the idea.
I'd like to see a rematch where its run what you brung or no holds barred anything goes kind of duel, a mans man duel, not the girly duel that you so cleverly designed the rules in your favor.
Am I the only one feeling this way? Or would others like to see a rematch such as this?

Competition is always a bad thing.
The ripest peach is highest on the tree.

High Noon sequel in the works

Good Lord, first I have a 'Girly' tree now I was involved in a 'Girly' duel with the cards stacked in my favour. We might have to get the Marshall back in town to take care of this matter. He is on his honeymoon but always up for a little action.

There a new sheriff in town!

We might have to get the Marshall back in town to take care of this matter.

What do ya mean get the Marshall BACK. Sounds like we already got one in our midst! Just ask him nicely and he might even be able a re write the rules for us!:)

I had to look this one up Marc about the peach thing. "continuous, unflagging effort, persistence and determination will win. (remember thar word win). Let not the man be discouraged who has these.
Here is the problem Marc, I wouldn't have any of these bonsai if it wasn't for competition. In my days we had a fierce rivalry amoung the bonsai bullies in my area. I would lay in bed every night and go over my collection species by species comparing them to my peers. I will never forget when a certain person found a better buttonwood than what I had. It was devastating. I wanted to strangle the person. I had bonsai rage.

Competition is a great thing! It is the nature of animals to compete for oil, food, shelter, sex. This is how we evolve to be better and better. Competition with spot landings, target shooting and other objective games like football are great. Competition with subjective things like bonsai, surfing and drinking are foolhardy. Too subjective :p

Who the hell competes for oil, food and shelter. Sex however is more like a lot of begging and whining

FourMileMarc,

Are you saying that if you put a good bonsai beside a bad bonsai you could not tell the difference? Should we eliminate judging from all competitive but less objective events? Let see... ice skating, diving, gymnastics, dancing? The Olympics would be pretty dull in my opinion without the gymnastics. And how good would the gymnasts really be without the dream of winning a gold? How about the science fair at our kid's school?

Your statement encourages mediocrity in bonsai!

Sincerely,
Howard
