Japanese Flowering Quince cuttings in training.

Thank you ?!! I’m not worried about flowers ? but growth and development , I’d like to have a yard full of them , have you done the sawed off rootball I would love to see . I don’t like to cut branch off nice tree and throw them away , seeing as that take root fairly easy. Thank you for your insight it is greatly appreciated , I love your new juniper too!

One more; about previous years cuttings , isn’t the international Bonsai article the make angled cut on two sides and plant deep, stated that these will root quickly and fill pots rapidly ?

You are very welcome. I did inverted cutting with elm, pomegranate and olive, but quince. The reason is that I did not have a chance to perform with quince yet. This is a big inverted cutting for olive root!

It is absolutely correct. When you make a cut like that, you have more chance to have the cutting survive because you increase the cutting surface area.

The contorted quince Unryu has more flowers 2 days ago. The elderly one has pink color! It is good I think!

I saw this plant's future trunk line !


I could prune all unnecessary branches but I did not do that yet!! I still want to see its flower patterns beforehand! So, it had flower buds on 1/19/18. As you can see, each flower bud has its own design pattern!

This mini quince bonsai starts blooming again.

This little quince was from the root suckers! I left one flower quince in the plastic pot unchecked. Its roots escaped the drainage holes and invaded into the ground. After I cut the root right outside of the drainage holes so I could remove the pot, the remained roots were still down there, and kept growing up the suckers. Now I have 4 trees in that area of the yard. This is the first time it blooms after in the pot for 3 years!


Because the mission of the sacrificed branch was completed, I removed it this morning

At the present time, there are 3 Japanese flowering quince plants blooming in my yard. I can compare their flower colors.
The regular one has salmon red.


The Nichi-Getsu-Sei has a arterial blood color!!!


I grouped them together to see the difference

I had let this plant grow freely until this afternoon. There are a lot of suckers from the surface rootage.


After all the suckers were removed


After pruning some branches


The right upper branch will be kept for now because I want to enjoy its flowers which are coming. I will put it into the bonsai pot soon.

This one is airlayer which was separated from its mom in July 2017.
It has some flower buds at this time. Two lower branches will be removed in the future.

This is another quince from air layering 2 years ago.
It has some flower buds this afternoon.


It is very interesting to see the root surface created in other side to counterpart to the weight of the tree as in nature.

When I observed those flowering quince this afternoon, I recognized something on the bark.


Are they lenticels or adventitious buds?

WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THOSE. The Nichi-Getsu-Sei, that is. Seriously awesome. I thought Toyo were nice, but THAT one is absolutely stunning. You’ve got to have one of the most extensive collections of anyone on this forum, as far as different species and cultivars go.
