Hacks Maples

I had built a little propagation tent to try some cuttings this year, they seem to be doing pretty well. I hope to see some new growth soon. I used pumice and perlite as my medium. Couple of mister nozzles tied to a saw horse and a piece of plastic to hold the humidity. I left the end open.

First repot of the season. Trident starting to leaf early. Big scars to the back. Stovepipe soil exit, so maybe layer one day? This is a field grown tree, first repot after collecting 2 yrs ago. Primary purpose of this tree is to start learning to build branch structure and the apex.

A.P. Nishiki Gawa, pine bark. Ground layered, not great, not the worst. Planning on building my tree from the shorter right trunk. Airlayer the other side. If it lives of course, hahaha

1 yr from airlayer standard AP, I put 2 others in the ground but decided to start working this one. Hacked this one proper

Worked on this tree a little today. Cut back the leader as the wounds have healed reasonably well. Hoping for a little back budding and chop lower in the future. Super nice day here.

Had some success with my maple cuttings propagation experiment. 18 little cuttings moved still alive. Amur, kotohime, nishiki gawa, and one chisio improved.

Dug the mother plant standard AP today, roots were a mess so didn't leave much to start over, good luck little treeView attachment 355838
Mama Bear did pretty well last season. I've got a branch positioned for a graft. Going to let the leader help close the wounds for a few more weeks, maybe cut at the end of June. These strike cuttings fairly easy so I may take some for root grafts next year. 20220501_125904.jpg20220501_125938.jpg

This one is in the maple literati thread, growing strong this year so it got a hard cut back and fresh moss dressing. Pathetic attempt at an approach root graft going there... we'll see next season. Maybe defoliate later this season if it comes back strong. 20220501_132106.jpg
