Gallery of some really crappy trees

Please do. Thanks for your posts.

Keep it going Vance. It's the sign of a man to take hits and keep on going. And it's the sign of a little boy to keep spewing venom in ignorance. Loose lips, sink ships. And to quote something from the Bible, Matthew 7:5 "You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Have a great week!!!!!
Sam

Let me know when you want to do this. Don't wait till after you have the tree, let me know before you go looking for the tree. It would be my honor and pleasure to talk you through the process.

Vance, I would love to see some progressions! I'm thinking of giving mugos another go.

I meant the mugo reply below in response to you, if you need help let me know.

Thanks guys for putting a more positive spin on this, believe me it is helpful and appreciated. I guess my only regret is that my artistic talents aren't up to the level my developed techniques deserve. Couple that with at least two years of not being able to work on anything more than to keep it alive my stuff is in not as good a quality as it should be.
Bullshit! Your trees look impressive, and the fact that they come from cheap nursery stock makes it even more impressive. Makes me wonder what you and the skill and talent you have could do with collected yamadori! And as far as attacking others, thats rubbish. You always treat other posters fairly and with respect!

I try to be honest, some don't want honest. If I see a tree I really don't like or doesn't interest me I say nothing. If asked I will coment.

I read through this thread. Lots of agression and debate over value. To me, a Bonsai is worth how it makes me feel even if it defies conventional techniques and tradition. I try to be open minded and look for potential wherever I go. I have a lot to learn, but the small collection I have are trees that I found interesting, different, and made me feel good when I looked at them and saw the final tree among the rough outline of what could be. I recently bought a Shimpaku that spent 15 years growing beautiful branches. I looked at it and what struck me was not up but what was down. There was an amazing "claw" or roots and powerful trunk with a sweeping line that intrigued me. The first thing I did was a devastating chop. Now the wait begins. I have to say it is hard to walk past it and think about how much energy and time the tree had spent to develop.

I enjoy Bonsai, but not the agression. Vance, you have a talented hand.

Hi Vance, that first Mugo in your second post; it's pretty striking, could you share some of its story. Was it collected from the wild or nursery stock, how long did it take to develop etc. I skipped all the bull$hit between page 2 and 15 of this thread because I figured there wouldn't be much discussion about the trees themselves anyways :P

i think the 2nd and 3rd photo are the same tree. the pig got butchered and turned into dog food. shoulda left it alone i think but thats just me

Seriously... for someone who doesn't appear to have posted any trees of his own... I think your thought gets about as much weight as a baseless opinion deserves. I'll give props to anyone who at least has the chops to show trees. Vance gets more than props... he has my respect... he's put in years of work on trees, and contributed to the community regionally and on-line. I'm not sure what you've contributed beyond being a troll....?

(I'll likely get in trouble for feeding trolls again...)

No I don't agree with your comment... your opinion is short sighted... you're looking at now with no vision for the future. The tree had to be simplified. Mugo grows like a fiend... when the tree's structure is developed it'll be a much better tree than it was... by a country mile.

If you had been interested in a genuine discussion about this tree you wouldn't have decided to state an ill-considered opinion in an insulting way. There's nothing wrong with being wrong... there is something wrong with being an ass about it.

so simplifying means taking a perfectly fine tree, that is well ramified, has nice proportions, developed foliage, interesting two trunk character and setting it back another 15 years? that makes no sense! the tree the way it was is the best this tree will have ever gotten and any improvement that itll have by "simplifying" it isnt worth another 15 years or so of redoing!

so how long would it take to grow it out to be of the same quality as the first pic? 2 years? 5 years? 1? a few months? ...seeing as you know about mugos so much you could take a guess.

hey vance how about an update on this tree. victrria has a chance to show me off here :)

Clearly you have little to no experience with the species.... Again... Short sighted.
