Fall Colors 2016 - Post 'em up!

Nice colors and good work on that fence!

Thanks T! Still have another section to do. Still undecided whether to leave it to age to a natural grey or stain it. Either case, I need to wait and let the wood dry up.

Here is a spooky one. Happy Halloween!

My FL sugar maple is just starting to change, despite getting lower fall temperatures than it ever would in most of its native range. I think it is going to put on a really nice show in the next 2-3 weeks.

Acer saccharum floridanum has much smaller leaves and shorter internodes than Acer saccharum, so I can see it being truly suitable for larger sized bonsai( rather than, the leaves are too big no matter what, but if you must make a bonsai, it better be a big one).

My little sapling will obviously need to be grown out a lot more, and wintering it in PA in a pot is questionable. Probably a good candidate for the attached garage.

Many stretches of trees are past peak at this point here, but many are still near peak fall color and their are areas where there still has been little change(as of November 1). See first photo.

Second photo is a small Acer saccharum I picked up because I just had to have one that will turn brilliant orange to red(local ecotype tend to just turn yellow). Yes, my bonsai budget is quite limited currently, so I am collecting a lot of local seeds/seedlings, buying the bare minimum of supplies and just a few cheap starter trees that will need years of growing out.

Finally, here is a Japanese maple (I don't think A. palmatum, forgot the ID) I gave my mom for mother's day 2015. Just starting to turn a bit orange. I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic, but we shall see what kind of color it is capable of soon enough.20161101_142142.jpg

Then there is this large Acer palmatum that is nearing peak red color. This tree (posted about once before) will always have flaws, but I am going to try make it as "good" as it can be. Ignore the funky wiring job, I just wanted to start getting some movement in the branches and only have wire of a gauge much too thin.20161101_144936.jpg What I will likely do is wait for back budding on each branch close to the trunk, chop back and then regrow most of each branch. This tree needs a TON of work.
