Fall 2017 contest anyone?

Work on bonsai always depends on weather and climate. That usually means those with the loneger growing seasons will have the advantage. I believe that's why the end is in next may.

Hi Vance,
Also @defra, I wonder if a fairer competition might have a full season as a parameter. Doesn’t worry me either way as I am an downside upside down grower anyways,
Charles

Just another tought:
Improveing a design is not only about shaping the foliage one could also create jin's/shari's work on deadwood to improve a tree....

Why would you want to do that? That gives you two maybe three scrawny little branches to support the roots and many years to grow out enough to make a credible bonsai out of it. I would think more of putting some heavy wire on the trunk and scrunching it down and use the branches you already have to make a bonsai.

Once I really got into it I just couldn't come up with a good plan. This is my first Yew. The upper portion has long straight runs that I think would snap. I'm good with long term as it's just little side project and I do want to greatly reduce it. It will look like crap in six months but maybe 6 years it will do it for me. My lesson from this one " make a plan" I didn't study it enough before I went for it

I have found over the years that sometime it is best to just go after the top of the tree one section at a time and if it looks like crap you at least have more crap to work with down the road. What you have now is not much better than a rooted cutting. Don't think about this style and that style think like nature pushing the tree around.

Find another tree and start again.

I'm on a budget for Christmas... Kids first then play things for me.

I did mine just after I got it, removed a hell of a lot. It is certainly a different tree now. It could probably do with some wire for winter. Still not found a second entry yet.

We are thinking of making a plant order from a garden center but not sure if it would arrive before the deadline, would a screenshot of the receipt and a link to the tree ordered be an acceptable entry?
You never know, they do claim 24/48 hour delivery but from past orders that normally means 24 hours after they have got your order all in one place 2 weeks later.

Sure that will be fine

Sweet, we have to make a paypal claim from another order that has never shown up and not had any correspondence with the company(different one) first but hopefully we can order it this weekend. Have to let the wife choose all her flowers first though.

^^^ Really nice trunk on that one.

On what one? :p

What does everybody think about posting updates?
Is it ok if people place updates or just wait till the end and then showoff the progressions made ?

I would like to see progression threads. I started one for my entry.

I wasn't really planning on updating mine until the end but if people want to then they can I guess.

Also I just made an order so should have a few candidates coming, hopefully it will arrive before the deadline.
Will probably choose a Callistemon as I killed my last contest one. Also have a Trident maple, Gingko, Acacia and Eucs that I could choose from but they may not be established enough to do a real styling.
