Fall 2017 contest anyone?

So basically you are looking for the biggest improvement/transformation between now and the end of the year?
It's not for me to say, but would that not be the case in doing something like this? This really is the essence of the art and practice of bonsai. Whether you start with nursery material like I am above, or a thousand year old Yamadori, it really does not become bonsai without the efforts of the human being that possesses and cares for the tree. Just the definition of the word tells us that. Even if you simply put a tree in a pot and call it bonsai it would not have been what it is without you making it so; good, bad or mediocre. I don't think anyone sets out to make a tree worse than it was before they started work on it. It is my hope my attempt does not do that.

As to this happening before the end of the year that time line or any other has to be the subject of some negotiations. I am thinking that maybe it could terminate some time this coming summer. That way we can all see the development and long term result as we would in a simple rotation in caring and developing a tree.

Sounds good.

Phone broke ....

Cleaning up bogus entries will be difficult.

Time for a new phone.

Exactly

@Vance Wood
Go for it!

Will open a entry thread with the basic guidelines today and will advertise some to encourage people to join :)
We should get fairly decent participation due to the fact that no parameters have been set that tend to exclude people. When rules are made by people living in Florida or even S. Carolina the tendency is there to tend toward tropical trees and extended growing seasons, and consider the great unwashed North as irrelevant in the scheme of things.

Fall contest sounds like "Instant Bonsai" like the red pot challenge. I enjoyed those and saw a little Mungo last time at Lowes. I haven't jumped on that train yet. I'd be in.

But I really like the idea of Vance with transform something you already got. I got a few stumps in training boxes as well as some sticks in pots. Measure the contest on how much improvement you can make over the winter and into spring. Trees of any stage or quality would apply. I would think better trees would be harder to show improvement.

I'm thinking carving, wiring and spring repots showing life into next year for finished pics.

But, I'm in as always whatever the game:)

I think of something like this

Winter games 2017

I think I'll actually jump in this time.

Sounds good! I like at least April or later. Late May even may allow for a light prune to pose for pics. As well as show at least short term survival. LOL

I failed the last time. :(
Like I said it's unfinished business. Even have an excuse to go as we need more strimmer cord but really need to get the initial work done now ready for a spring pot up.

I'm in. I have a yew that I didn't do anything with this year.

I am thinking is should end in May of 2018, that gives everybody a shot that wants to participate but because of climate feel constrained. Sometimes it really does boil down to the issue of doing something that is not fatal.

Ok i think i know what to do :)
If we end in may there is a oportunity if one choose to improve a tree to change planting angle's too so thats great

Changing angles is one of those things that could turn designs to a total different path :)

Absolutely correct, sometimes the littlelest things can make the biggest differences. Between a wink and a nod.

This hedge pruned beauty turned up today, would it be alright as an entry?
Plenty of room for style as it has none.:p

To be honest I am probably going to pick up something from a nursery anyway but no harm in asking.
