Fall 2016 Contest....Who's in?

Is there a price ceiling on the tree? I just read $5.00., hell you can't buy a handfull of clipping for five dollars.

No there is no price limit.
No size limit.
No place of purchase restriction!

If there's no restrictions on where we get it, I'll have to enter my new oak when it comes next Thursday.

I was shopping yesterday and earlier before I read this thread and I won't partake in this one. I did tell my Wife I would enter a Box Store challenge for fun much earlier this year but honest I was looking at 500 - 1300USD plants the last two days and feel this will just turn into a "show your wallet" contest not a box challenge. Should be fun though and wish you all the best ;)

So I don't plan to expand my collection at this time, it's more of a numbers thing than a $ thing. That said I bought the below Colorado Blue Spruce earlier this spring and after initial styling. This was baught for under $30 at Canadian Tire (Canada's big box store)

I've worked on it since, I'll have to get an updated image. No it's not close to being finished, this is a long term development plan.

show your wallet"

Let's not forget the bonsai stealing drones will snatch that wallet.
And the tree!

Honestly.

With voting open to any Nut, at any level, an already nice tree won't necessarily receive more votes than anything else.

Voting will be based on transformation.
Wow factor...
Added value....

Stay tuned for a Full Contest Rules Thread.
And a voter registration and responsibility thread.

@Guy Vitale ....the playing field can only be leveled by the fact that one only has so much time to ponder the trees design and steps forward. Please sell a tree so you can buy a new one to join!

@aml1014 Since you won't have that tree in front of you till after the beginning...I will accept that entry.

It's not about buying an "already-nice tree", it's about being able to buy a much, much better trunk. One could easily spend $300-500 on a fantastic trunk that still requires a massive transformation, and that person would have a huge advantage over somebody who buys a $30 plant. I'd strongly recommend setting an upper limit to avoid that situation if I were you, otherwise the winners are likely to be those with the biggest budgets.

I play in a different nursery stock contest with a $50 limit, and I often find myself wishing the limit was higher because the difference in quality of stock jumps significantly once you hit about $75, and again once you get around $125-150 (and again around $250-300, etc). But the limit is there to keep it real for exactly this reason.

Anyway, just something to ponder. I'll probably play regardless if I have time to get scrounge up some decent material.

It's no big deal to win or lose. What is significant is every one is able to show what they can do with limited time and material. This can humble the wise and exhault the humble. I like the fact that the tree is tracked over the year to see whether the tree is a tree or BS because it died prematurely.

If some schlub comes marching in here with a $15,00 Limber Pine I think most of us would be able to discern the effort involved into making any thing else into a credible bonsai.

I think you are confusing this contest with the one just ending. This one will be over by Thanksgiving.

I am going to sit this one out I think. I have too much going on right now. I'll vote though :p

I got 2 mugos at meijer for 5 bucks each. but that was a probably 2 months ago.

This contest would be fun to win but it is not about winning to me unless there is prize money I don't know about. Some will crash and burn but learn something and some will surprise themselves with how good they do. Either way you will be better off. The chances of most people, including myself, of beating Sawgrass is slim to none but I'm really not entering to compete against him and the other experts but more in it to challenge myself and give me a reason to buy another tree. I'm in.

I'm not sure that would qualify. Pokémon Go Master stated: "Must purchase a box store/non-bonsai nursery tree". But maybe I'm wrong??
