Extended season starting trees indoors

THE PINE SEEDLING CUTTINGS ARE STARTING TO GET MOVING.

Can see some mature dark green leaves popping in here and there.

I’m growwing these slowly as the first round will have another 5 months yet!
The beginnings of the next round is underway as the seeds are starting to sprout.

Keeping water on the cool side at 68 degreesF

Also adding 2 ml per gallon hypochlorous acid once a week….so I put in 1/2 cup a week to the resevoir……gives me an assurance of no anaerobic bacteria growing out of control.

Should be a fine crop!
Exciting!
Lights are turned all the way up since a chilly outdoors environment.
Hold the growhouse around 75-80f…….a little radiator heater connected to a regulated outlet on the environmental controler….lights out comes on at 64f……lights on comes on at 75f.

All this important…..lights out should be a 10-15 degree differance.

Light intensity is is @ 600-800 par…….in deep winter I can add another light when it is bigtime cold outside.

I also run a dehumidifier at lights on.

ONCE THESE START GROWING THEY GET REALLY VIGOROUS.

Definately starting to fill in and green up!……..I am getting ready to make another 200 in a week and then more and more.
As long as they are all started by 1st of January they will have plenty of time….its about a 14 week process from the start of the seeds and then the cuttings.8FEBF8D3-C3BA-47B5-9216-952F92B57810.jpeg

SIGNS OF A GOOD CROP

For me anyways,I have to see nice thick and wide cotlydon leaves on the seedling cuttings like this.I only see this when fertilized with co2!
Although there is an outdoor crop in order also as I don’t know if I can as of yet provide an AC for the warm season.
The outdoor ones grow extremely well.

The indoor ones grow FAST and definatley more weight to them……….at any rate I find in both situations to start them in co2 fertilization does benefit them alot. The strong blue spectrum light starts a stockier plant for sure.
Alot of the plants vigor is grow practice and tech though…….calcium uptake makes a very vigorous and healthy plant…………so much more to be said on this topic.

Co2 is just plain fun though!!!!
THIS CUTTING WAS ONE OF THE BATCH BELOW AND STRUCK ROOTS ONLY SIX WEEKS AGO!!! ( thats when the domes are removed).SO AT SIX WEEKS THIS IS QUITE PROFOUND GROWTH………DEFINATELY A CO2 FERTILIZATION RESULT FOR SURE.

STARTING TO FILL IN WITH THE MATURE GREEN LEAVES…..starting to air-prune roots too.

Making the rest of the cuttings now.

Looks everything will be fine for Spring and then another very large crop outdoors too started early in the growhouse.

These have lots of time to grow……I’ll probably have to slow the growth actually!!!

They get quite vigorous and active when they start air-pruning roots like this!!!

THEY JUST STARTED SUDDENLY FILLING IN…..AND ROOTS TOO!

Leaves everywhere……..some major air-pruning of the roots at this stage.Getting strong……….these are easier to grow at this stage.View attachment 521326
I can’t wait until your next batch is ready for market 😁

Couldn’t resist!!
I just had to make a few flats of Siberian Elm for some ready air-layered starter trunks for sale in Spring.

These are so cool.I made 5 flats of them……..I will let the leaders rocket into growth in the growhouse and proceed to make a groundlayer or girdle just above the roots before sale. These will probably be nice and thick ground layered whips and then cut back just before sale.

Way cool……trunks could be nearly 2” at the end of the 2024 grow season if grown well since a 3 mnth early start in a co2 fertilized grow house!!!!
They will have at least a 3/4” trunk by this Spring……

Also pictures of the one I grew…….92C2AAEB-9E9D-4537-8D08-EC1AE5F2F25E.jpeg1CADB5AD-91FD-4A94-BF22-401D521EB45F.jpegE64B6F0B-6CDE-4454-A0F0-51052D6B92AF.jpeg92DA0CD4-CA69-4E4C-A138-5ADFA8098830.jpeg9CC2FC43-0F2C-49C6-9719-8F145D9A5A31.jpeg576DED86-0078-4584-AC0B-5937A5E91FA4.jpeg5BECA01C-B377-4892-8182-A7D7424E5CE7.jpeg2027623A-594E-4A6C-A18B-D5F879266185.jpegF60E3FA3-DCFC-4A8B-9235-16EA5F1589B9.jpeg92C2AAEB-9E9D-4537-8D08-EC1AE5F2F25E.jpeg1CADB5AD-91FD-4A94-BF22-401D521EB45F.jpegE64B6F0B-6CDE-4454-A0F0-51052D6B92AF.jpeg92DA0CD4-CA69-4E4C-A138-5ADFA8098830.jpeg9CC2FC43-0F2C-49C6-9719-8F145D9A5A31.jpeg576DED86-0078-4584-AC0B-5937A5E91FA4.jpeg5BECA01C-B377-4892-8182-A7D7424E5CE7.jpeg2027623A-594E-4A6C-A18B-D5F879266185.jpegF60E3FA3-DCFC-4A8B-9235-16EA5F1589B9.jpeg

Got loads of seeds. Some are still in the post.
European Hornbeam,Field Maple,Japanese And Trident Maple,Zelkova. Also a few 1gallon Coreana Hornbeams to try cuttings.
I will get the Zelkova started about 6 months early. Will see with the rest as they need warm stratification. Some will be sewn indoors and others will be put into a seed bed in Autumn to sprout in Springtime.
I like to get an early start indoors and manipulate roots from layering young seedlings and then plant in grow bed at Springtime.
Learning techniques from Dirr’s handbook on propagation!
Also internet learning science of Hydroponics.Very interesting.
Soaked the seeds in Kelp overnight. The seeds were dry and developed a hard coat.I learned of gibberellins in kelp are responsible for some of the very first changes or metamorphosis in seed germination. And it helps with dry seed to soak overnight.
In Derr’s book he also mentions benefits of kelp for cuttings.I am making a foliar feed from kelp and Fulvic acid in a few days.Definately some plant science there!
2oz bag of kelp will last a long time as only 1/16 tsp per gallons.
Edit i realized the posted date but still interested if source still has any .Would be ok to ask to learn where you got Zelkova seeds from. Im hoping to find Zelkova Serrata seeds but all I seem to be able find is out of stock or worse amazon, ebay, etsy sellers whose seeds do not resemble Zelkova Serrata seeds or have poor reviews. Incredibly good read with your gibberellic acid kelp germination. Saw seed packs in photo and realized same place I checked but they are out of stock. Great post regardless

Hey Cmeg1, great thread with a wealth of information!

Btw, did you know that you got a shout out in a podcast from Jonas Dupuich back in 2021?

At 21:40 he mentions you by name and about this thread.
I really don't understand why anyone goes to Reddit asking tree questions when we have some of the best folks in the world here.

How awesome! I was able to secure some Mikawa seed from Japan from Jonas……was definately an exciting grow.
Thanks

Yes sheffields will be the best source…….zelkova seed will not last more than a year or so in my opinion……..Sheffields will get his soon.He does every season…….He is the best because he lists the harvest dates.

I actually had to source from a tree near my home……I am confident they are havested well………zelkova you have to harvest at the right time……when they are brown and before they fall off…….(which happens very easily and quickly).
