Extended season starting trees indoors

MINI BROOMS LEAFING OUT!

These are nice so far after their very first defoliation.I can let them leaf for about 5 weeks, but after they extend about an 1.5” I will dim lights slightly and let them stall the duration of the time before putting into a storage refridgerator at least 50-70% of them anyways. Reason being I have to make room for 500 black pine seedling cuttings by that time.

JBP SEEDLING CUTTINGS

Started about 150 of them before I got tired.
I wait until the red stem creeps up to the base of needles and they cut well, otherwise too tender green.Better when I can cut 1/4” from base of leaves.
Should have about 500 of these ready in spring and also another 500 by autumn2022.
Big year for sure.

Good one Curtis, whats the media this time for seedling cutting, looks very interesting. Thanks

It’s the Grodan Grow Wool.I am going to pluck the cuttings out as soon as I see root nubs and plant into 1.5” cubes the very well and radial rooted ones.
I used this media because it is easy and very water retentive and can fit the cuttings close together…..there is 150 cuttings in the picture which means I can fit about 600 in two trays.

The media is on a smart tray suspended over a 1/4” of water and heated at 85 f with a thermostsat.Grodan states this higher temp will increase rooting time by about a week.

The steril media is very important when using this higher temperature.
Most growers use 75f.

Getting more even light to the Zelkova Brooms……and a needed rest!

As I am using the pine seedlings for cuttings I am able to make more room to spread out the zelkovas.
Also have dialed down the light intensity to between 200-400 par intended for motherplants which will initiate lots of photosynthesis and energy stores. Very effective if you have the patience as the growth is essentially halted.
As the pine cuttings are transplanted after rooting in the next 5 weeks I will have to decide what to do……..quite a few of the Zelkova Brooms will have to be put into cold storage fridge to make room for 500 JBP seedling cuttings for Spring sale………I need to keep priorities straight and not be so tempted to experiment at the cost of larger quantities of much more proven crops……JBP!!!

I just do not have the room……although it is very fun letting semi-developed trees be still in growth for a while to increase in energy, brix, backbudding and rooting potential by means of low npk, high co2,lower light intensity and lots of bio-stimulants.

I am currently experimenting with dunking entire trays of seedlings into a 5:2 ratio of fulvic acid /kelp to have max absorption for the entire plant………for like 1/2-1 hr.
I just did this to tiny siberian elms and the current JBP seedling cuttings at pre-cutting stage.

These a friggin awesome. When you are ready to sell these let me know. I will be good for a few of them .... maybe more.
You probebly have this posted somewhere, but do you have a website?

Thanks.I enjoy these alot also.I actually will do a second crop with longer trunks in Spring.Get that really professional Japan look to the starters.
These will also be air-layered at the base or actually deeper into the stonewoolto give another 3/4” of trunk length to them…..should be way cool.

No website as of now, just my ebay store link in my signature below….thanks!

Already have your eBay store in my favorites. I bought JBPs from you a couple years ago.

ZELKOVAS

Seems these are of differing quality,if one could decide this early. This is really a test run. When I have a bigger fascility I could have much more leeway.I will stretch the trunks on the next crop for sure.
Will definately be differing prices too come Spring. Some will inevitably be average stock, but healthy nontheless !!!!

TWO WEEKS LATER AND ZELKOVAS ARE HAPPIER YET!!!

This is always the best part for me.Just let them sit and photosynthesize with minimal growing. They just get pumped and high brix.Start looking very cool to me and stronger.

The ones that actually have broomed themselves I will grow all the cool season indoors. The ones that the broom style has seem to alluded will be air-layered at the split in the branches just above the bole. The good brooms will be air-layered also ,but at the base for massive flare.
Although some of the un-broom multi/double trunks can very well be brooms in diguise!!!.

They will get stored in the fridge to make room for the 500 tree JBP crop in the makings.

Will be totally exciting as I am leaving enough room for about 30 or so Zelkova Broom in a smaller tent!
Get to watch them slowly grow, get air-layered and defoliated….or vise-versa.They will actually get quite thick trunked…..relatively speaking.
Next crop will have much longer trunks.I will be sure to make it so…….spring start crop.

more……….(if you notice brown wilted leaves its because I often drip salts on the leaves by accident when putting the flats into the tents).
Some are on the brink of nitrogen deficiency, but I do not mind if its just a tiny hint of it.Very easily corrected.

PINE SEEDLING CUTTINGS ROOTING NICELY

These are rooting.Should be good.
Very low cuts…..barely 1/4”.
Cannot wait to get these potted….made room for over 600 of them!!!!
Baled on the zelkovas that had no shape and kept about 40 of them that did and stuck them in the fridge at about 37 f. Along with Siberian Elm seedlings.
These pine should look fantastic as I am planning to dunk the kelp into the tiny plants as opposed to spraying.Maybe half strength dunked for an hour or 4!!! will be good…..hopefully maximun budding and low branches!!!! Stoked

Dunking JBP seedling cuttings in Fulvic acid / kelp.

Always had great results with foluar applications making outstanding backbudding on these seedling cuttings. So now experimenting with much more thourough absorption of the kelp by dunking for almost 4 hours in a half strength solution as too much can burn the seedling foliage.
The fulvic acid has been scientifically observed to take the kelp bio-stimulants directly into the plants cells in as little as 4 hours.I am seeing if I get low branching on more of the plants this way as before it always rounded out to being about 50% with low branching( kelp induces a auxin interuption to induce the plants survival reaction to a broken branch and will throw lateral back buds extremely pre maturely……very fascinating and useful for bonsai).

Hopefully get some very exaggerated branching right on the roots and multi trunk/clump starters.
The most branching I ever created with kelp foluar was 13 shoots coming from the roots!!!!
