CM BONSAI!!

I purchased 2 Siberian elm seedlings from you this year and am happy to say that they have done very well so far with trunk diameters in excess of 3/8”.

I have three questions for you regarding development:

1. Should I wire the trunks early for movement or use the chop and grow technique?

2. Can the ebihara method be used on this species for nebari development?

3. While ground growing would give me the fastest growth, what are your thoughts regarding grow boxes or Anderson flats as an alternative?

Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, I am in Lewisburg PA (zone 5b).

I would do a in ground ROOTPOUCH ( greenhouse megastore)…the in ground quality weave can last up to 5 years and self prune…

A much better option than in native earth ground growing.

I grew mine in a rootpouch 2 year weave above ground on a table… similiar to an anderson flat style grow.

Roots are vigorous enough for ebihara

What soil mixture are you using in the in ground root pouch pls. Is there a difference in the "in ground root pouch" verses other root pouches? Thanks

They are a heavier weave to last 4- 5 years before roots will poke through and defeat the purpose….they self prune in the pot by entrapment……….Probably somewhat heavier mix,but also aerated…….perlite/coarse vermiculite….. inorganic volcanic substrates that are clean.….. I would stay away from native earth and even potting soil that way they are ready to go into bonsai pots immediately when finally lifted from the ground.

And if you go volcanic, they would have to be treated with a pH up and down……..the water, that is

Tempted to post a pic of how well mine are doing, but I'm afraid it'll make it even harder to buy some from next batch. @cmeg1 any chance I can reserve a few?

One of my two jbp from Curtis and this one is so compact you can’t even see the trunk, is there anything you would do to this tree if it was yours? Or should I let it grow freely I’ve never developed a seedling cutting, thanks guys

Ph your nutrient to 5.5-6.5

You will get better iron and magnesium absorption.
Since these are in volcanic media

Also a digital ph meter
