Bonsai shortcuts

If the result is ever good enough to get into a show, why would it matter that it's hollow? Do you expect people to announce that their tree has had foliage grafted onto it? Or roots grafted to improve the nebari? Can you give a good reason why this is so important to you?

Chris

The fact that Ryan thanked this post gives credence to my point......It is inherently different....The skill involved in developing a stump into a thing to behold far outweighs that of a few dozen twigs strewn together.....If ya''ll can't see that, get some glasses....

Oh shoot you're right, it would be SO much harder to go out and dig up a fat tree than it would be to intertwine cuttings together and care for them until they fuse.

Shut the hell up you immature troll. Move on. Get over it. No one cares.

And you know this how? Have you ever tried to weave dozens of saplings or cuttings together, getting them to fuse into what looks like a "normal" trunk? I would actually bet that it would be much more difficult to produce a credible bonsai that way than it would be to start with a typical stump. Ultimately, I would be very impressed if someone could produce a show quality bonsai that way.

Know this....I have been entertained...and that ain't easy.

I love Dario's threads....It's like a horticulture gladiator match every time....Selling tickets may support a small household...lololololol

He-he-he. I think you just got me beat. :p

I would love to read where you found that quote? Where exactly is that written and is this a rule or a guideline?

....or is this just your naive opinion?

I know I'm beginning to develop an opinion with everything you have to say. Smart money is knowing when to shut up. Read that above...go on....is that what you really wanted to be known for having said?

To say I'm no expert shows your ignorance......I surely have more knowledge on the subject than YOU , aswell as experience... ....

Is this an opinion again?

I would say that the only way to show that would be to pony up to the photo editor. Untill then you come off as half a dozen past newbs with a big mouth.

Yeah, I'm good with being known for that Smoke....I wish I still had a fraction of the trees I let go so some of this could be shut down.....Alas, I do not....I'm not going into a big ordeal about my experience within the art or anything else, but given the same amount of time and equal material to work with, I know I would outclass Ryan........Why anyone is coming to the defense of this is beyond me....But the whole gang's here, so let's get my lynching underway......

I know I would outclass Ryan

No please, continue making an ass out of yourself. Still waiting to see some of your trees though. Oh wait, they aren't even worthy of a picture. Or is it that you don't even have any trees?

Rob, I'm not trying to drag you into this, but Ryan, pay attention when he said "a couple/few years to complete'...Anything outside of a decade of work, I believe (as would many others that probably have decades on me), isn't worth much.....And I'm not talking dollars, I'm talking intrinsic artistic value...What your doing will never be a masterpiece, and if it won't be then what's the point?..I'm sorry, but this art is about beauty, passion, and patience, and those that strive for mediocrity have none of my respect...But, my respect would mean nothing to you anyway, so carry on.....Maybe you can yield traffic with your little cones when your done.....

Is creating a masterpiece really the only point of Bonsai? I think YOU are the one who is misguided and doesn't really understand the point of why this is such a passion for so many people around the world. It is interesting and intriguing because it can be something DIFFERENT to everyone who practices bonsai. For some it may be a passion/ lifestyle/ art form/ JOB whose only goal is"perfection" and the creation of masterpieces. That is fine, and those are the guys who produce the mind blowing masterpieces we all wish we we could achieve. For others, it may be a simple past time/ hobby... Just something they do for FUN and RELAXATION. That is fine as well, and No less important than the masters, as without the common enthusiast who works a job 40+ hours a week and uses bonsai as a way to unwind after a rough day, or the retiree who just wants a new hobby... Or the thousands of other enthusiasts around the world who don't harbor any intentions of becoming bonsai masters, there wouldn't be much interest in bonsai, and there would really be no reason for all the shows and arboretums and nurseries and magazine and WEB SITES... That promote it.

Your statement about his tree you are referring to never being a masterpiece and if not "then what is the point" is a horribly misguided thing to say. I know, it is your "thing" and you think it makes you all "edgy and cool" to obstinately disagree with people on an Internet forum. This statement though disturbs me because I fear people might read it and actually think you are right! Bonsai is something different to everyone, and if it brings joy and peace to someone's life to make a tree styled in the fashion you described then it absolutely HAS INTRINSIC VALUE! Whether YOU appreciate it, or whether YOU think it is a masterpiece is completely irrelevant!

I have been working on trees for damn near a decade of my life now and have no intent to display mine in a show (they don't even have many shows around here honestly), or try to create some three hundred year old masterpiece that people might mistake for a Kimura tree! I am sure there are about a thousand times more enthusiasts like myself who do it for FUN and personal enjoyment than there are masters who create award winning trees... But by your assessment they/ we should all give it up because there is no point? That is just plain wrong man.
Sorry to blast you on this, I have no dog in this fight- but that one statement really rubs me the wrong way. I hope that is not how you truly feel.

I let my collection go about 5 years ago out of severe depression after a death in my immediate family....I swept shop for Guy Guidry for a number of years, (2004-2007ish), Overwintered the NC Arboretum collection between 2007-2008 after I had moved to the Hendersonville area to get away from home.....Collection died underneath the care of someone I thought I could trust while i was away.....I just got back into things around February when I was offered a job to restore a collection comprised, for the most part, of what used to be show quality trees...I have cared for a number of Banting's, aswell as a few Naka's....Guy Guidry, himself, called me the next Naka, when I was a child...I don't want to show what i have, because what I have is nowhere near what I AM used to showing.....Take it as you will, IDC....

Specimen was the word I meant......I realize it is not as synonymous as I'd like but, regardless, I don't see a a big hollow cone as a specimen to be shown.....I apologize for my dramatically wrong word choice, I was a little perturbed at the time....

oh cool... now we get to compare bonsai resume's. I always love it when it gets to this point.

Lets see I have been in bonsai for 30 years, I belong to three clubs in which I do presentations for each. I teach and give workshops in and around the Bay area California for which I am payed for my expertise. I have taught workshops at both GSBF and CA Shohin seminars as well. I am the current president of the Japanese club in Fresno and past Vice President of one of the other clubs. I have bonsai articles published in Golden Statements, Bonsai Focus and BCI. I was on the Board of Directors of GSBF for 6 years as well as Chairman for the Education program in GSBF (Golden State Bonsai Federation). I have placed second twice in the National Kazari display contest held in a Japanese Museum in California and earned 1000.00 twice for my efforts. I have studied personaly with John Naka (RIP) Harry Hirao, Kathy Shaner and Kenji Miyata. My current teacher is Katsumi Kinoshita. I have my own profile page at Art of Bonsai and am known world wide for the building of stands which I have shipped overseas. I have been active in bonsai forums for almost 18 years spreading the technique of bonsai through text and pictures.

Big deal.....Does this make me better than you? Come on....Start acting like a fourty year old and not a 22 year old. Lifes too short to be on the losing side of a pissing match.

Just what exactly are you known for here? I know...edgy commentary that just pisses people off.

Sir, my credential were not stated to compare to yours....I would never be so stupid as to think a person of your years hasn't surpassed me....But they were stated to prove my point to Ryan that he has nothing on me.......Smoke, i respect your work, especially those fat little tridents.....My quarrel isn't with you...I pay homage when it's due.....

And for the record... from someone who knew Naka personally and worked with him in workshops, being compared as the next John Naka does not really carry much weight. John Naka was never really known for his tree s, rather he was known as an ambassador of bonsai and his never ending dedication to the teaching of bonsai.

That is what John Naka was known for....

I knew John naka, and you are no John Naka

Well said....I never really took it as much of a compliment, I never met the man...His trees are stunning though....

Then this is my point. Why did you feel the need to get into a pissing match with someone you feel beneath you? Did you get some sort of gratification by beating up on a kid fresh out of brain surgery that has done nothing to you?

All you have managed to do in a dozen posts is come off like a know it all bully and then run and hide behind a fake name and "I"m not ready to post pictures yet".

If we all waited to post pictures of trees untill they were finished this place wouldn't have one friggin picture on the whole forum. You just may find the expertise on this forum to help you get one of those wannabe's to masterpiece condition faster with a little help. Post away oh wise one.

Are you done bashing me for no reason to support a another person's claims, or should I get a helmet incase some more brow beating occurs?

First you brag about it, now it's not much of a compliment. Make up your mind!
