...and next a really hard freeze(down to 21F) should fry the remaining leaves off of what's left, which is a lot. Would it be best to protect the trees in this case, since they may not be totally hardened off for winter conditions?

Beautiful trees and very interesting my cotoneaster are a very bright orange right now , I’m not sure of the cultivar though

This thread is about colours, not who's got the best or the biggest one :p I'm certain many here can help you find what species/cultivar it is, that will help if it requires special care.

Lots of beautiful fall color in my area lately (which will all be crispy brown tomorrow). I think the color has been enhanced by the warm autumn weather delaying the time of color change until colder temperatures and a shorter photo period than when the trees usually change color.
