Arctic Blast moving in...

We got to -23F, or -31 C, but further out, away from the Lake, it was colder. I guess west suburbs and nearby Wisconsin farm areas got to -25 F or colder.

Right no at just about noon I am at -18 F or -28 C. High for the day will be coldest ever for a daytime high. -15 F.

When I was in my teens and twenties this type of cold was every winter. This is the first time it has returned in 30 years. We're colder than Fairbanks Alaska right now. At noon Fairbanks is +3 F, -16 C the cold got knocked out of the polar region, and settled on us.

It was a little cold this morning so I broke out the winter gear and wore a windbreaker to work. The few people at the office were surprised to see me not walk in wearing just a short sleeve shirt.

It's colder tonight. My tropicals are in the front room. All those windows in the sunroom and it being built over the ravine, it's feeling this arctic blast. Even a secondary heater in there...temps are dropping.

These are the kinds of temperatures that kill people. Please take care and don't take the seriousness of the situation lightly. Many of us are going to lose trees through this I am afraid. I heard some weather reporter state earlier today that it is currently warmer on Mars.

Wow really...colder than Mars!

It's sucks...knowing many will lose trees. I've warned newbies of needing to try and offer more protection if they can. But...this wind along with the arctic wind chill...sucks. The police are going around town looking for ones who have decided not to bring in their pets...because they won't survive it either, we have warming stations for ones who need it, one place was offering free meals and hot beverages along with it.

I really hope that snow is a huge insulator for some...I hope your signature mugo is tucked safely away somewhere from this blast.

I have buried everything as best I can, it's all in God's hands from this point. We had a natural gas relay station blow and they have demanded that we all turn down our heat to 65* until Friday or we run the risk of crashing the entire system. This is really fun?? Thanks for caring I really appreciate the concern. Global warming where are you?

Global warming where are you?
I think you'll find it over this side. We've been sweltering in record high temps for the past couple of weeks. More than usual, longer than usual and hotter than usual. Up to 46C here one day and we are in a cooler part of the country. Graph on the news this evening showing a gradual increase in average January temps over the past 10 years here.
Good luck through your arctic blast. I know it gets cold over there but some of those temps and the things you do to keep bonsai alive in winter still amaze me.

Global warming, not USA warming...
Besides, this is exactly what’s predicted by global climate chenge: an increase in frequency of extreme events.

And it’s not just in Australia that is hot. Here where I am it’s been the mildest winter I remember. This is the coldest we got so far this year (and that’s in Celsius)

Goodness! With that wind beating ones house. I imagine ones home temp is much cooler. I feel for you all. Hated reading that.

I will never forget losing our furnace 2013-14 when we had the -27F here. Frozen propane tank. My main house was 40F. By the time we crawled out of bed in the morning.

Take care on the other side of the pond.
Freekish weather there.

(We were happy that we got the first real snow this season. 5 inches last night, which is a once every 5 year event I guess. But at 30F that disappears with sunrise.)

Nope, you're good now, but I'll bet your trident will be breaking dormancy sometime in the next 2-4 weeks... when's your last frost date??
Fwiw, the procumbens can survive a Chicago winter outside if placed appropriately.
Most certainly they can, mine deals with winter in Québec fine. I never do anything special, just let the snow do it's job.

The company I work for sells propane and heating oil. Our drivers have been running themselves ragged trying to keep the customers taken care of. With this cold, combined with the wind, propane usage goes up pretty quick. And it's miserable for the drivers to be out in the elements.

Especially when they have to get up and down ice and snow covered driveways and roads. It is not an easy job.

We keep our house at about 63-65 during the day and drop it into the 50s at night. Drafty poorly insulated 100 year old thing, would cost way too much
to keep it warmer. When we had the big wind storm 2 years ago in March and lost power for 4 days, the coldest weather of the year hit. Temps in the house
were down to about 38 F. We had one little gas stove that was able to keep one room warm (60 ish) otherwise we would have had to go somewhere else.
Got a generator after that, not going through that again. Getting too old!

Got down to -4 F last night. Fortunately for us this cold air has taken "the long way" to get here, crossing the Great Lakes and getting warmed up
a bit (thanks to those of you along the way!). It can be worse when the air come straight down from the north with little to buffer the cold.

The blessing with this system is the short lived nature of it. Sadly though it will get far too warm! It will be above 50's for highs 4 days in a row and above 40's for lows for 5 days. Crazy swings not good for trees!

Pushing 70 F here by next Tuesday... buds will be poppin' for sure:(

We have a wood burning bronco hooked to a thermostat and a propane furnace. Where I live...private lake front...we know propane is not a guaranteed delivery. Hill on both sides to get to our place...lake front and lake well...at the bottom of the hill. I can see why they refuse. So we heat mostly with wood...propane being a back up. We have some flip thing that if the fire goes out...the furnace kicks on. I pity all who have jobs that place the elements. And my prayers cover them.

I am right at 1F right now. I am worried not because of this but because next week it will be in the 50s and then back down again! These constant extremes are dangerous.

It's 19 here, but 58 Sunday and 65 Monday. As much as I hate the cold, my little crabs are already showing signs of waking up from the mild December. Now weirdly warm for a few days, then cold again. Crossing my fingers.
