Arctic Blast moving in...

Currently have a trident maple and a juniper procumbens in Chicago suburbs (zone 5) and worried about these epic temps tomorrow. Both trees are in an attached garage in a big container with mulch up to the first branch. Is any more protection necessary? Thanks in advance!

I was going to worry, opened back door to try and move some trees around. Too late, all are buried in snow. Would not be able to find the ones I was worried about anyway. Which means, they will be just fine. From the last several snows, some parts of the yard have accumulated over 18 inches of snow, not all at once, but the last 3 events total. (18 inches is just under 0.5 meters for the rest of the world)
Buried in snow is a good thing, just about the best insulation you could use.

Nope, you're good now, but I'll bet your trident will be breaking dormancy sometime in the next 2-4 weeks... when's your last frost date??
Fwiw, the procumbens can survive a Chicago winter outside if placed appropriately.

What's the temps they forecast for you? You left the Satsuki out...wasn't worried? Our school has canceled for Wednesday and Thursday. Frostbite under the wind chill temps is a huge concern for those who walk to bus stops...those who wait for busses...and just being able to keep children warm if a bus breaks down.
Nearly unbearable...

The only trees I moved inside are the two I collected in December, and the 2-3 I wired aggressively over Christmas. They’ll be back out on Thursday morning.

There will be no such shortage except for Abita Strawberry Ale since they only makes that stuff 2 months out of the year and no matter how much I stock up, my children clean me out when they come home. :)
Switch to Andygator. It solves that problem or at least makes you forget about it...;)

Everything around us in cancelled including the husbands show at OSU tomorrow night, so we will be home with dogs fire and wine! Yippee! If the power goes out it will be a slightly different expletive inserted.
Hope everyone keeps their power in this line driven wind with as cold as it'll be. Be careful out there.

Yep, the cold is here. It is +1 F as I type at 5:52pm, it is predicted to be -23 F by 6 am tomorrow, that is -30 C, for the rest of the world. Last time we were this cold was January 1985.

But the trees are all snuggled in under the snow. I do have 12 to 24 inches of snow maybe even deeper in drifts. After all 3 snowstorms, and our episodes of Lake Effect. Shots of some 45 trees on the ground.

Your Satsuki must be cold hardier than the one I got from Scott. I know the one I got from Don Blackmond is. Sounds like you got it under control with no concerns. Glad to hear it.

My big satsuki sat out on a bench when it fell to 11F last year... I did put a heating pad under the pot.... which ended up cracking when I watered it before the hard freeze... ugh!

It’s just fine. Narrow leaf cultivars tend to be more cold-tolerant, but all azaleas grow like weeds around here.

This weeping Ryusen came from a similar arctic blast. I am glad I have a controlled cold greenhouse. But...what does anyone else do with outdoor temps being arctic to prevent dieback like I seen here in my own landscape trees. Those who don't have them tucked into a shelter? Just curious...I am wrapping a landscape tree before it hits with burlap...which we didn't wrap them all this year with mild winters. Though the maple was protected in burlap..and it didn't save the dieback from happening. Those wintering bonsai outside...what are your plans? If any...

Winter Storm 2019. School was canceled nearly 24 hours ago in preparation for this historic event. #neverforget.

You guys even made the Memphis news last night. Heard all about your epic inbound blast...the ‘ham was a call out so we’d appreciate the weather we wouldn’t be getting. Apparently “weather” really sells advertising so everyone pimps it like the weather channel hustles every hurricane and now name’s winter storms. $$$

Living lake front our temps vary by 10 degrees. We seen -27F last time it blew by in winter of 2013-14. My husband's trucks is in the shop which offered the read out. My outdoor sensor was moved into the tropical trees. So I doubt we will grasp just how cold it gets at the lake here. But I am glad you have the snow for an insulator.

We got to -23F, or -31 C, but further out, away from the Lake, it was colder. I guess west suburbs and nearby Wisconsin farm areas got to -25 F or colder.

Right no at just about noon I am at -18 F or -28 C. High for the day will be coldest ever for a daytime high. -15 F.

When I was in my teens and twenties this type of cold was every winter. This is the first time it has returned in 30 years. We're colder than Fairbanks Alaska right now. At noon Fairbanks is +3 F, -16 C the cold got knocked out of the polar region, and settled on us.

I'll just be quiet now....
