Any fan of bonsai heirloom on here?

Just gotta quit clicking on his YouTube vids…. I know without looking it’s train wrecky (i love me a good train wreck) but more clicks leads to more shitty videos. Don’t feed this crap and it’ll eventually go away.

it seems he thinks the heartwood of a tree is dead material?
Is it not? I know the sapwood is still functioning
Most of the wood in a tree are dead cells. Even the sapwood consists of mostly dead cells.
On top of this, only the cambium and growing tips / buds have cells that still multiply, and actively contribute to the growth of the tree.

PSA:

First off, I would like to apologize beforehand if I offend anyone with this Public Service Announcement.

I didn't know about this channel until Bonsai Mike called him out on FB. Anyhow I've been hooked on watching his channel. But not in a good way. It's a train wreck.

Milton Chang "Bonsai Heirloom" is a Self proclaimed Bonsai Master with "50yrs of experience." I'm sure he is a good man with a passion for the hobby and I commend him for sharing his garden and perhaps bringing interest to the hobby.

I usually like to stay in my lane and NOT publically bash anyone. BUT today I have to make it clear that this man is setting the Bonsai hobby back several decades with the info he is teaching.

This is a prime example of why you don't use potting soil in bonsai pots. He also uses a whole big piece of mesh liner at the bottom of the soil which blocks the drainage holes, claims that the mesh helps roots division and keeps the roots from circling the pot. But its a wet soggy mess. Upon removing the tree from the pot the roots appear to be rotten and 2/3rds of it breaks off as it's pulled out and he says see there's no circling roots. That's because they are rotted and fell apart in his proven soil mix.

A Master of 50yrs should not have this kind of wiring work.

A master should know that a deciduous tree in winter goes through Dormancy and there's no need to to do a scratch test on a tree in the winter time. Spring maybe. Summer definitely if it looks dead.

He also repots the tree but slamming it to the ground. Hmm interesting technique.

Holds a branch and continues to call it a root cutting. maybe I'm too critical.

Simple fundamentals like not straight edge sheering across needles is completely ignored. He completely ruined that 8200.00 Sierra Yamadori tree. Its a crying shame. I doubt it will live there's barely enough needles for it to draw energy from.

I'm not judging his design or philosophy but just the lack of understanding of basic fundamentals and knowing the difference between how to prune conifers and deciduous makes me wonder how he calls himself a master.

Please don't compare him to Peter Chan. Peter at least knows horticulture and knows how to keep trees healthy.

John Naka realized it way back then and told him to quite Bonsai.

It's true it's his channel and he can do what he wants but sometimes we gotta fact check claims for those new folks getting into the hobby.

People should honestly stop talking about and watching this channel, its only adding credence to the channel...as thousands of people watched it...he must know what he's doing
And why does this annoys me so much...because if you type in bonsai in youtube most of the videos that appear first is his 🤦‍♂️

Thats probably becaus eyou have watched it.

I get 0 of his videos because I dislike them when I hapen to open them and do not like what he does.

I did...too my regret...i accidentally opened the video thinking it was a herons video, saw it wasn't heard the whole i've been doing this for 50 years thing and thought great a expert...but halfway through he started doing dodgy stuff and i thought nope...
Not to mention the once or twice people on this forum had links with his videos without specifying who's videos it was...sigh...just yesterday actually where he was doing scarring on a tree with a tool that looks like it needed to be burned rather than used to scarify a tree

If it comes up in your youtube recs, you can hit the three dots and tell youtube to not recommend the channel anymore

He says he likes clip and grow method, but he doesn't form any canopy in any tree, as I could see in his exposition.

Every tree he has has no green. He likes dead looking trees. I don't know how he could keep them through 50 years.

About his soil, I use organic old style soil, but i don't like him. It seems too loamy for me. The idea about the moskito net it seems ok to me, and i will try it next spring.

Holes in the sides of pots= The Oregon Hole. I think the Portland bonsai society or one of those groups over there have an article on it.

Your channel is one of my favorites. Always looking for more content.
Your annual guide to Japanese black pine is hands down the most thorough, easy to understand and follow Care guide video for the species on the internet. I’m very thankful for you and your family. God Bless yall, bro.

Honestly, if we truly find his content as appalling as we as a community seem to... We could always copyright his channel to death 💀 not that that's the moral thing to do but possibly the only way you'd stop him and his bot farm

You could report his videos for spreading misinformation, but I don't know what effect that might have.

I think Dave4 nailed it. Best not to feed it with the clicks. The more clicks his channel gets the more it helps his videos get suggested.
