All aboard the Mugo train!

Aside from the fact that they tend to do poorly in zones 9 and 10, those roots and the large number of branches all up and down the trunk are why I don't care for this species. How do you go from this to something attractive when you have that many stubs to deal with? Do you just prune them all back with concave cutters and wait years and years for all of them to callous over?.

While those are healing over you are refining the other parts of the tree. It all kind of comes together at once.

I live in zone 9 and mine is still alive... I hate it... but it's alive.
You seldom fimd a good Mugo out of the can. It is necessary to cultivate the form considering what you have to start with. I have written on this extensively in the past but now we are getting into the realm of art and everything changes. Things are no longer objective except the beginnings but they become subjective depending on the artistic goals of the artist.

Quote of the day, for trueness!
I will try a 360 vid with my phone as is, on the weekend... It is very tall and base is thick compared to what everone else posts.

Have you every tried to bonsai a mugo that is very thick untill where all the branches come out at a knuckle?

I don't even know where to find the bonsai there...

You need to examine the trunks and there appear to be many. Typical of some Mugos. You need to determine which ones have nice lines and have the potential to form a multi-trunked bonsai or a small forest or group of trees. Start there and think tree Daniel San.

I don't mean to attack you here Michael, but doesn't this thing take years and years?

To get a great tree, most of the time, yes. But it seems to me that with mugos, you have to endure many years of your tree being really ugly and pock-marked before you finally get a decent looking tree.

once the stubs dry out you can jin them or cut them back all the way to the trunk. If you cut back too early the scar will be huge and ugly, if you wait till the raw stub dries out the scar will be small.

Letting the stubs die back and dry out isn't something I did when I tried a mugo pine many years ago, but that sure seems to make sense. You can only jin a small percentage though, or it looks absurd. I remember back in the 80s when someone brought either an Italian stone pine or a mugo pine to a club workshop. I watched the guy jin a dozen or more spokes from the trunk, and one of the old Japanese guys walked up and said "what kind of tree is this?" and the guy replied "mugho pine" or "stone pine" (sorry, I can't remember which), to which the old guy said "Looks more like a porcupine." And then everyone laughed except for the guy whose tree it was and me, because it cemented my fear of bringing my stupid ugly trees to workshops.

For what it's worth, the workshop was just a club meeting workshop or club show workshop, not like a paid one-on-one workshop, and the "stupid ugly" guy was one of those first generation Naka student bonsai legend types. He was above-average in bonsai knowledge and experience, to say the least. If I had the opportunity to take trees to him and get his advice now that I'm into bonsai again, I'd be all over it.

F time.

You know Railroads were the first to adopt standard time zones.

Toot. Toot.

Time to tie folks to the tracks!

Hell No! I got caught on a bridge on a bike with a train coming once. My cousin went off to the water side of the two tracks, had to go get him.

Guess what day it is?

Look at the base of the tree. It's wide and heavy; that alone is enough to make a decent bonsai but you have to do what I suggest previously.

I am going to hace a good look at it this weekend.

Thanks once again

Im hoping to find another mugo here in MT before I leave. The entire city (Billings) is covered in mugos so Im hoping I can find a decent one at home depot.

Im also coming back in December and hope that I can collect some sage on family land or some ponderosas and junipers if I can get a permit.

Sounds like the bridge scene in Stand by Me

Between that and Mike F channeling John Kinckley, Jr. in his fandom of Vance, this getting a tad too creepy for me .

John Kinckley,
Who? Maybe Hinckly? Man!
If you people want to say derogatory thing about me that's cool. But maybe you should go back to 6th grade and learn some spelling.
Come on! It doesn't work as well when we have to guess what you are trying to communicate.
Go study, come back and then we can trade insults. Maybe you, carp and mat could scrape up enough to get a GED or online diploma.

I don't understand what your problem is with me or are you just another troll? Of course I don't know why I should care I do not see you making any sort of contribution around here anyway.

I think they are just a tad jealous Vance. Not everyone gets to meet a bonsai master and are able to call him a friend at the same time.
And the contributions they make here are a great source of entertainment for me and others I'm sure.
I take the trollers bait most times, sure But just like in real fishing you don't know what's on the other end of your line until it surfaces. You could be looking at a little mild mannered sunfish or a White Shark.
You've been around me enough that you know I have a brutal sense of humor. And a very smart mouth. Part of my charm. And yours. It's why we get along so good. Just a couple of mugo stroking guys.
I love this forum. And by now everyone here knows where I stand.

Never the less ;I would like to know what this guy's problem is with me and how it became personal?

No, I meant John Kinckley, Jr. He was a mixture of Hinckley and Mark David Chapman who would joke about obsessing over people he wanted to kill and take unsettling souvenirs from them. The guy who portrayed him was more creepy than funny and he never made the big time. The first one or two jokes were funny, but three minutes into it, you'd just sit there cringing and wanting a fresh drink. Your comment about killing someone to get Vance's tree sounded like you stole it from his schtick, especially with the ambiguity in your joke.
