A Potters Progress

Sanding - most of these I've had to do a small grind to stop any wobble. With the really low ones, there's not much room for error. I need to refine the design a bit so it doesn't show.

I haven't been waxing the feet on unglazed pots, do you do that as a matter of course? I didn't expect unglazed to stick, but the Soda ash would have changed that.
You soda'd your kiln?!

I'm a fan of waxing with a little alumina mixed in, keeps em slick, you could probably save the alumina for reuse.

And piles of silica sand.

Too...Nice.

COOOL BEEEEANS!!!

No, I'm not soda-ing my kiln, I sprayed the pots with a soda ash solution. Bit too much.

Kiln opening Sunday for me, mostly test tiles, but also a couple of pots. First a new shot of my favourite unglazed from the last round. Please excuse my old fleece as a backdrop, I was trying to show the colour properly:

Now sometimes you've got to go with your gut, and I've been in the mood for texture and exploring surface decoration. I still think these fit a Japanese aesthetic, but I know matching up with a tree and not overpowering it is a thing, however....

This is carved from a single block, I've been reading up on Ryuen. In quarries local to me, you can see vertical drill marks in the quarried rock faces.

I dropped the block whilst I was working on the outside, but I kind of like the way it got whacked out of true:

Also another damn foot stuck.

Nice!!!!

Improving by leaps and bounds, friend!!

I am internally "moved" by the feet on that first pictured one. I LOVE them!

I'm gonna be entirely "true".. and say... I'm thoroughly jealous of that first one, honestly. It's absolutely splendid..

Every line is fantastic.
The feet instantly reminded me of Kirby :)

I was inspired by some Heian Kouzan pots where he cuts vertical slots in a pot, I think it's like a lobster pot or other basket. I wanted something horizontal though.

Sometimes I like to throw coins and read the I-Ching. Not divination, kind of a thought exercise / reflection / indulgence. So I threw these coins, and the first hexagram that came up was 44, 'Compulsion' with changing lines that turned it into 28, 'Critical Mass'. Those are the motive forces I had in mind while making this one. PS, you all don't have to read my poncy drivel, but that's the internal narrative!

Wow! The texture on the side is phenomenal.😍

I consult the I-ching oracle as well, occasionally, but my book is in Spanish.. which isn't too big a deal.

The new pieces are great!

Keep it up!

This is terrific! All of the carving work including the feet is just exquisite! Super awesome.

I made some simple pots to glaze, the glazes are a lot different on the pots. I kept the size similar to some Japanese shohin ones I saw at a recent show. I was surprised how thin the bottoms of the pots were, but I got mine down to 3mm, they held up and look pretty similar to those in the show.

Namako type glaze:

It looks great, but this pot came out in 5 pieces, all of them welded to the shelf in pools of glaze! I need to spend some time working on my glaze consistency and application.

I was fascinated pulling this out, the side on the left (and the above photo) was closer to the hot kiln wall. On the right, cooler, bluer.

The back, cooler towards kiln centre, bluer. I'll get it right soon.

Variegated matt charcoal, again application, next time! Also different feet.

Final pot, high iron variegated. Came out totally different to my test tile, I think because I pushed the iron up:

The drippy edge on this goes matt purple, something to make a feature of.

I'll have to start selling soon, we're getting overrun with pots.

I also had a couple of carved unglazed rectangles in the same firing. Pics aren't very good, I'll take some proper ones soon. I wanted to do three with the same dark water theme, I'll come back to it. Just so many things I want to make.

This clay looks different in every light. It can be a deep Manganese purple to dark matt black. I enjoy the carving a lot. I wanted something expressive with traditional elements, and yet quiet.

So beautiful and so unique, don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like that before. Yet it also has a traditional vibe.

Love your style on these, Jeff! They’re looking great.

Love that glaze😍
Thanks! It's taken me a long time to get it repeatable. There are still a lot directions to explore with it.
This version is kind of similar to Youzans, I think this particular expression comes from a slow firing.Youzan img_4237.jpg
Youzan - Namako glazed pot

There's a lot of info in the bonki pot encyclopaedias, Kuzumeishozo was an early master that many refer back to:
