A collected hawthorn

Is that the same tree? It looks similar but what happened with last year's growth?

Yep same tree. It only got that tall last year and dropped it's leaves in fall. This spring I cut the branches I'm not keeping. It just started to regrow new leaves. Those limbs are the ones it grew last year. Just the leaves are small yet. It will look the same here in about a week.

You got a nice one going here, i see a nice informal broom comming up.
Trunk has some nice movement. Potential looks sweet

And this one. That baby elm ain't so small. It's a cutting I shoved in there last year. Cork bark I think. Getting it out in the spring.
This hawthorn also took off. Must have been jealous if how much that other one grew it's first year.2015-08-11 18.41.38.jpg

There's a reason they call it miracle grow.

There's a reason they call it miracle grow.

hello sir, fellow Michigander here. I drive through Mio pretty regularly on my way to lewiston. new to bonsai, avid tree collector, just dug out a hawthorne similar to this one, first try at a winter collection, hope it ends up like yours couple questions for you. where do you get those colanders? which miracle grow do you use? do you always moss in your pre bonsai for a particular reason? also really interested in your jack pine work, im going to find one this spring. another question, do you have any luck collecting fir trees? how about alder? Thanks, i love your collecting posts, great info for me. keep them coming!

Hi there Waltron.
I used to get 5he collanders from a dollar store in Fairview. They went out of business so what I have left is what there is.
I just use Miracle gro regular. 10 10 10 I think.
I moss everything I can for a few reasons. It helps keep the surface moist so roots grow at the surface. It also insulates the soil in direct sunlight.
I don't mess with fir or alder.
