2021 National Bonsai Exhibition - Sept 11-12

Im in the same boat if anyone has a ticket or 3 they will sell (im going with 2 others). We have flights and airbnb but no tickets. No ones fault but my own but hoping someone might have some for sale. OOPS!

The 7th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition will be this September 11-12 in East Rochester, NY.

Come see the exhibition bonsai, suiseki exhibit, demonstrations and critiques, and swing by the sales area and perhaps pick up a tree or two! Due to last year's pandemic lock-down, you have my permission to spend twice as much as normal!

Don't forget - entries are due by July 1, 2021.

Will there be a display honoring Mary Madison this year? Just wondering as I won't be there in person just thinking how fitting it would be.

I was looking at NY state's covid guidelines and it seems the event is limited to 250 people indoors unless they were able to navigate the red tape and set up distancing protocols. 250 isn't much. Just the exhibitors and vendors alone must be >250 people.

You could probably get more people into the venue by offering blocks of time throughout the day....

250 in at 0900am they all exit at 0950am
next group
250 in at 1000am they all exit at 1050am
repeat until the end of the show.

More people would be able to get in and see the trees. I doubt someone would spend an entire day inside looking at the trees. So it could work, get in 2 or 3 times should be plenty.

You'd have to charge a lot less if people could only be inside for 50 minutes, and that would probably severely impact the vendors. 50 minutes is not enough time to do both the show and the vendors.

So far I haven't seen anything official from Bill (or anyone else) regarding restrictions on attendance, or if they can only let in a certain number of people at a time. I would think he would have notified attendees by now if there were going to be those kinds of restrictions. It's also possible this is a very fluid situation, if NY or the county change the rules at the last minute (depending on covid cases locally which don't seem to be too bad) all bets would be off.

Oh, and....it's very easy to spend 2 full days at the show - the weekend goes by in a flash.

Yeah I messed up too, I have an air bnb but no ticket haha. Fortunately I booked a place in the finger lakes so I'll be busy drinking wine at least. And probably buying myself something nice this fall to make up for it
beautiful area. i think upstate NY is gorg

I have yet to attend a big show so I really don't know. But here in the DMV area a lot of museums have time blocked tickets. You show up at your time and enter. They have already calculated how much time it takes to go through the museum and have a good idea for the occupancy.

I don't think time blocks would affect the vendors as there would always be people inside.

If future shows are like this, then I for sure see tickets being purchased in bulk and then being scalped at a higher price when they are sold out.

I'm definitely curious / concerned about COVID impacting this (didn't want to be the one to bring it up). I'm following the lead of whatever Bill decides to do and communicate, though. It's a hard, hard year for these kind of events and I think we all need to be understanding of that. For my own sake, I'm moving forward with attending until I get direction not to, and not drawing conclusions about shows past or future based on what happens this year.

If that means the vendor area has some limits, that's fine by me and I'll still be happy, and will be glad it happened at all. I'm certainly sorry for folks who couldn't get tickets. It's hard out there, folks.

I'm not sure it would work that way. Imagine you only have 50 minutes total inside the venue (show and vendors are in the same building). There are usually a couple hundred trees in the show. You can certainly breeze through the exhibition in a few minutes but to really take in the trees, that requires a couple of hours in my opinion. But say you could do it in a half hour. That leaves you 20 minutes to go through all the vendors (there are lots of them). Say you need a couple of pots, maybe a new tree, some supplies. You have to go through all the vendors, check out what is available, make decisions, then make the purchase. All in 20 minutes.

Just doesn't work.

You also have to figure in, if you require everyone to leave every 50 minutes, that takes time. Then it takes time to get the next group in the door. Etc.

I get what you're saying. I was meaning one would have re-entry after their first entry. 50mins would not be enough time for the venders at all, but with re-entry it could work...maybe?

I'm super bummed to hear many will not be able to attend. No one to blame that on except for Covid/the times we're living in now.

I am very excited to be able to attend and exhibit a tree. Looking forward to seeing everyone who will make it.

I am glad I didn’t book a hotel or flight before knowing that the show was sold out. I never read that there was limited capacity anywhere and that the show can be sold out.

I wonder how many people doesn’t know this and have travel plans with no entry ticket to the show.

I had booked a flight, then saw the sold out. Bummer but I got a full refund

I wonder if it would be possible to do a rotating share of a ticket, as long as the second person also paid Bill for the entry fee. I know that Bill (my husband) will not want to stay in the building the whole weekend, so if that would work at least one more person could be there part of the time. I would also consider doing that with mine, although it would be hard to say what times I would want to be in the event. I am thinking there may be others who might consider the same.

there are people to blame, countries, organizations, but were not at the point to address it yet.

1984 vibes everywhere, in this thread. time allotments, orderly lines, capacity, vaccine passports, etc.

have a great time at the show everyone who attends!!
