    Fertilize Olive?

I received my Olive about 3 weeks ago. I slowly worked it into full sunlight and I think it's settling in well. Since I'm in New York I only have about 2 or 3 months till I have to bring the Olive inside because of the cold. Should I fertilize it, this late in the season? Or, wait till Spring?

    New Olive Question

I just received a 12 year old Olive Tree that I ordered from Israel. I planted it in a large pot because I want it to grow out for a few years. The seller said that I should keep it out of direct sunlight for the first couple of weeks, but I would think that after spending a couple of weeks in...

    Indoor lighting for Little Ollie?

I've moved my Little Ollie Olive tree indoors for the winter. I do not get good sunlight thru my windows, so I jerry-rigged an artificial ight setup. I'm using a desk lamp with a 15w, 900 lumen florescent bulbs. The Ollie gets 6 hours of direct light per day. I'm wondering if I should get an...

    Fertilizing Winter Olive?

It's winter here in New York, so I moved my Little Olie into the house. It's getting 4 - 6 hours of light, I put the pot in a tray with a little water (for humidity) and I water it every few days. But, I feel like I should be giving it some fertilizer, even though some "care sheets" say that you...

    Good fertilizer for my trees?

Newbie question, I know. But what would you guys reccomend as a good fertilizer for my trees. If it matters, they are all pre-Bonsai's: Hibiscus, Europen Olive, Dogwood, and White Oak. So, liquid or solid? NPK level? Something affordable.

    Another freebie from the nursery!

I stopped by a local nursery and they gave me another plant for free! I'm not sure what it is, but I liked the trunk and figured I could work on it next Spring.

    "Rose of Sharon" Question

I took a trip to a local nursery and found a Hibiscus, "Rose of Sharon", with a really interesting trunk (I'll try to post pics of it later). The worker ended up giving it to me for free! It must have been sitting there for awhile because the soil was covered in weeds. Its in a 5+ gallon plastic...

    Warming wintering roots?

I've said, in another post, that I've seen a video where a guy talks about using reptile heating cable to keep his Bonsai's roots from freezing. Is this is a necessity? I realize that different trees/plants require different things. I have 1 Willow cutting in a 1 gallon pot, 2 pre-Bonsai White...

    White Oak Pre-Bonsai Question

I just ordered 2 White Oak trees. They should be approximately 10 inches tall and have their roots warped in damp cloth/burlap. Being still pretty new to Bonsai, I want to make sure I get this right. It's the beginning of Fall here in New York so once I get them I plan on unwrapping the roots...

    Nursery/Potting soil for pre-bonsai?

In my never ending Bonsai research I came across some information that explains why you should use nursery/potting soil for pre-bonsai. They say that the root system needed to grow a thick, strong trunk, grows more readily in that kind of soil, as opposed to grittier Bonsai soil. I will be...

    Olive wintering question

I live in NY and the winters are usually pretty harsh. I've read that Olives should come inside when the temps are just above freezing at night. I also have a Willow growing from a cutting and I planned on building a box with a wooden frame and plexi-glass walls and roof (basically a mini...

Is this good "Kitty Litter" for soil?

While reading some posts here and elsewhere I've been seeing that our UK Bonsai brothers and sisters use Cat Litter as a very effective soil. Of course here in the US its harder to find a suitable product, but I came across this oil absorbent from the Moltan company (sold in auto parts stores)...

How to thicken 'Little Ollie' trunk?

I just picked up an Olea Europea (Little Ollie) pre-bonsai. I want to grow the gnarled, irregular, thick trunk that Olives are famous for. Being still new to the art of Bonsai I've been doing a lot of research and would like to verify my plans with you. It is in a 1 gallon nursery pot and I...

To repot, or not to repot

Hi. I have a couple of Willow cuttings planted in pots. They have only been in there for a month. I'm happy because I see some buds starting to form, so I would assume that roots are forming. The problem is that the soil I have them in was a concoction I made that appears to be to dense and...

Newbie with a soil for cutting question

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and to Bonsai. I've been doing a lot of research and plan on doing a lot more before I purchase a formed Bonsai tree. But, in the interim, I have taken cuttings from 3 different trees (Willow, Maple, Oak) and am trying to see if I can get them started. I...
