Boy if some of you are only watering one or two times a week you must be growing popcorn farts in this weather. Read back through this thread, I believe I have discussed watering Mugos several times and even in the last 24 hours. Two times a weeek????? At least two times a day. But standard watering for a Pine is a couple of times a week...This has been one of the reasons people fail with Mugo Pines. MUGOS NEED TO BE WATERED FREQUENTLY BUT THEY NEED TO HAVE A SOIL THAT DOES NOT STAY WET. Good grief I wonder how many times I need to repeat this? It is beginning to reveal itself as the two principals that seem to elude the bonsai community about Mugos is in it's departure from the norm; watering and repotting.

I'm not jumping to anyones defense, but its humid here, if I have an overcast day or two I dont need to water any of my trees unless they are in tiny pots. Even my pond baskets wont dry out with the wind blowing directly at em, if its sunny all day, theyr dry knuckle deep everyday, so I water everyday. But 4 times in 3 weeks... Uh oh. Unless its been raining and overcast for the other 17 days.

The problem that has kind of snuck up and bit me on the butt is the fact that many people have been killing their Mugos because they do not water them enough. They seem to be under the impression that Mugos need to be kept dry, because they are trying to keep their Mugos the same way they keep other Pines.

Hmm i could water more i guess but still the soil remains moist at all times right how i water now i water when topsoil dries up

Also like soldano666 if it is cloudy i dont need to water most of my trees on sunny warm days i water all trees in the morning exept the mugo and some other trees becauae they are in the shade untill the evening

That was an over sight on my part in giving incomplete information. Yes it has been raining A LOT over the past 3 week and humidity in the 70's +. My statement about my watering was based on need for ME to water not that that was all the water they are getting. My apologizes didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers as I take the techniques and information here to heart and try t apply it the best I can. I do check with my fingers for moisture. I watered well this morning and it started raining about an hour go and has not stopped.

Then you have a problem with your soil mix staying too wet. I hear a lot of you saying that you use Akadama, I am beginning to think this is where the problem lies. I believe I have mentioned it before that Akadama will turn to snot on a rock in two years or less.

Hmm i dont use akadama ill go and see what causes it i realy dont think its the soil would be a more suny spot be ok by now?
Maybe it catches more water from the bench above and rain then i think ? Il go and figure this out but points made clear once again

Well here I go being contradictory again

I water my trees once a day, every day in the morning. That includes ALL of my pines, every single one (JWP, JBP, Mugo, Scots and Pitch pine).
If we really start to get hot here, I may go to 2x a day (morning and 2-3PM).
Whoever told anyone that pines get watered 2 times a week was an idiot because that will kill any pine that is out in 80+ degree weather.
Most people water JBP at least once a day not 2x a week. Of course this also depends on the soil mix used.
I also use akadama in my mix once I get my trees into smaller training pots. It does not turn to snot here.

My mix for large training pots is pumice, lava and gravel in equal parts.
My mix for smaller training pots is pumice, lava, akadama and gravel in equal parts
My mix for regular bonsai pots is pumice, lava and akadama.

Does this include if it rains heavily on sequential days over a weeks time?

I don't believe this was ever stated in this thread, "pines get watered 2 times a week" I believe that was a reference to my watering schedule but I neglected to mention the amount of rain we have had ...my fault

Approx. what % is akadama and how much if any organics? Ahhh no organics. I just noticed your edit lol

If we get more than half an inch of rain the day before then I delay the sprinklers. It wouldnt matter much if I did or not honestly.
I forgot to mention, my sprinklers run for 30 minutes

I use 25% to 33% akadama depending on which pot the tree is in.

You can rub the buds you don't want anytime you want the sooner the better. As to the other stuff I am going to wait and see how it plays out due to what is starting to appear to be a massive misunderstanding.

Seeing that you use an inorganic mix, the possibility of over watering is minimal I believe. Others new in dealing with mugo pines, myself included, using a mix containing 30% or more organic fear over watering and root rot and maybe over think it in trying too hard to succeed with mugos. I'll continue following the teachings here by @Vance Wood as best I can. Always a lesson to be learned.

Well I guess this is my last stop on the train, at least for a while.
According to everyone on the planet, I do everything wrong and my trees should be dead.
But its quite the opposite. My trees are healthy and growing.
Thanks for the ticket and the ride.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I apologize if it came off like that. It does get difficult and confusing trying to keep up with different opinions and/or methods from those with more experience and great success. I hope you'll keep posting your trees are a great inspiration as well as others here.
