Some updates for the start of 2021. I moved last summer and am still working through a major remodel / new garden so sorry for the lack of recent updates. The pines are so big now that even with expanded bench space, I'm running out of room! Next up I'll be doing some major pruning to open up the trees and get more light in to the lower growth. I'll probably make some selections to whittle down the number of trees I continue developing.

You can see a couple of examples of the embedded wire technique. I only did this on 3 trees, 2 of which are still alive (the really monstrous looking one is a fusion of 3 seedlings, the other one is just a single tree with embedded wire). I can see why growers do it -- while it is a very artificial look, it's a bit of a shortcut to adding character to these very young trees. I suspect these will be among my 6 year finalists even if they aren't the best trees in a decade or so.
A little late but I cut back my pines last weekend. The goal here was to let light into the lower growth and encourage growth in the main sacrifice branch. The third pic also shows the outcome of stripping the needles off of the sacrifice. This also helps bring light and air into the foliage. Don't do this anywhere you are hoping for a bud!
