Not everyone is Ok with sharing a personal goal, but maybe for bonsai some might open up. What is it that is a personal goal you would like to share.

Is it to have a tree entered in a club show
a national exhibit
own a good camera for better photo's
procure a nice Japanese pot
how to wire properly
own a custom stand for your prize tree
learn to graft, or air layer
how to choose material
to get your kids out of the home faster to free up some cash...
get a better spouse thats more understanding of your tree needs

For me, I would love to own an antique Chinese pot (large) for a certain tree.

take a tree from pre bonsai to finished with a nice pot. i know some don't believe in a "finished" bonsai, but I think I'll get there at some point! I have some shohin now that are pretty much finished, just need maintenance work and improvement on their existing structure, but the general concept is complete

still some years away from the plants that I got as pre bonsai/nursery material

I will say my goal right now is to have a tree in a local show and more long term would be to attend the classes at Ryan Neil's.

I'd like to achieve a confident level of knowledge that would allow me to teach others the art. As corny as it may sound, I want to make a positive difference in the lives of others through bonsai. As far as my trees go, I would like to have one of each of my favorite trees that would be considered magnificent by my own eyes.

I never had much interest in showing trees.. We really don't have many shows in my area to do it. There is the Carolina Expo in October, and a Winter Silhouette show in NC a month or two after that.. both are in N.C... A couple hours from me. Maybe one day I could put a tree in one of those, but my goal is more to develop my trees to a point where I think they could be in a show I guess. Once I get there I might think about it... I probably have a couple that are close.

It is a good question smoke.. My goal has always been to just learn more, get better... Very general. Maybe setting my sights on something more specific would be helpful.

I can tell you a few goals I achieved lately from your list:

I got the better camera in December!

I have gotten a lot better at wiring with a little more instruction, but still have some room to improve.

I am working on a few grafts this Spring- just basic approach grafts to improve nebari, and I might try a thread graft on a Maple soon...

My kids are young and I am trying to get my wife to come around... She is getting more and more used to my little hobby! The trees were here before she was...

My first goal is to have trees that last. Getting the horticulture aspect down to know what the trees need, when they need it. I don't have any 'finished' trees and I don't buy trees. Rather, I collect the material I work on. That said, my trees are long term projects and my goal is to see them through to well designed specimens.

I want to show trees at some point, but not until it is a tree I can call my own, that I collected and made what it is.

Also, I have begun making pots, born from the love of bonsai. I have had significant time to dedicate to learning lately, and I feel that I'm growing as a potter. So, a goal is to eventually have a kiln at home, followed by a full studio where I will continue making pots, bonsai and other.

Marrying the above two goals is my ultimate goal: to show a tree I collected and developed, planted in a pot of my own creation.

1. Improve: quality of trees, quality of stock, quality of work, quality of what I share here.

2. Teach: this year, in conjunction with the Alabama Bonsai Society, I’m teaching a series of beginner bonsai classes.

3. Collect: I always look forward to getting out into the great outdoors.

4. Prepare: for the 2016 Nationals…and the 2018.

My second goal is to continue to use Bonsai as therapy and to one day develop a new style or technique that is adopted as a standard. My first goal? To be as good as Smoke!

As for shows that's something I have no ddesire to do. There is an ok show in Columbus Ohio in July every year, made it a few years ago and the trees were not impressive. There is the one in Epcot I am near in the winters in Florida and another north of Daytona Beach Florida but I never get the chance to make them. I have the nice camera and can take great pics of most anything with Bonsai coming out the worst of all. I can wire graft and air layer.

My absolute goal would be to catch one bastard taking one of my trees.

My goals are remarkably similar to Brian Van Fleet's!

1 I plan to graduate from Boon's Intensives.

2 prepare my JBP for the 2016 National Show

3 ready enough shohin to be able to put together a decent 7 point display

4 attend Kokufu-ten next February

5 continue to teach bonsai classes at Plant City bonsai

1-3 years, Cull and Collect until I have a good collection of trunks and Nebari. Buy house, build wicked dope garden, for said collection. Make it to Rochester.

3-5 years, have a couple nice specimens of everything in my zone. Obtain a JWP, and an antique pot worthy of it. Begin pottery/stand building. Win a Joshua Roth Competition.

5-10 years, have a tree in Rochester.
To have trees that take people places, forests, shohin displays. Trees that make people yell "holy f" out loud!

A goal of having trees that make people yell "Holly F" out loud? LOL.

I don't know how I left that out of my list..

I would like to take my trees that are almost there to the next level. At that point, I think I can start thinking about showing them at a reasonable show. (our local shows are not very good)
If I ever have a tree good enough, I'd love to have it go to the national.
But I need some stands first apparently.:(

I could stand to learn grafting better, especially root grafting.
