Picked this up this summer. I had a couple things I was going to do to it next spring.
Looks like my dog has other ideas on the direction to take it. I wonder if it spoke to him?
Whatever, apparently he likes it without branches and different areas of bark. I think it's going to be ugly but this what he has left to work with.20150906_145501.jpg 2015-11-28 14.50.30.jpg

"Ruff , ruff, rrrrr, rrrrufff, arf, rufff"

That's dog for.....

Work like this should be done in spring!

Are you gonna keep it?
I bet it lives!

I skipped straight to the pictures and was shocked to see what I thought you purposely did to your tree!

Man I hate dogs. Mine has enjoyed several of my trees herself. I had a rosemary that I have yet to see a trace of... Pretty sure she ate the pot and all!

Maybe your dog just knew you could not decide which style you wanted so he gave you the opportunity to start all over. Good puppy.

That is a real shame! I had a roommate once whose dog decided my trees were chew toys... And my books, tools... Pretty much anything Bonsai, she had a problem with it... I lost a large portion of my accumulated trees. Probably for the best though- most of them were crap... One of the few I still have that this dog did work on for me was a tiny little Crepe Myrtle. I learned from this tree's ordeal that a god can impart diseases on a tree... The germs in their mouth can cause an infection or something? I am not sure the exact science of it, but this guy was SICK! Like... More than just an old "boy that was stressful when half my trunk got chewed off" sick. I can trunk chop a tree and see it bounce back rather fast... It took a good 5-6 years before this tree grew like normal again! I turned it into a little cascade and I rather enjoy it now, have to post a pic.

I hope your tree is healthier than mine was after a similar experience.

I'm sure it will grow in the spring. It will look like hell but I'm pretty sure. It's missing chunks of bark all over. And that shiny stuff on the trunk? Frozen dog spit.
It was out of the bucket for days. It was frozen though. I had to work out of town last week and by Tuesday my wife wanted to toss him off of a bridge. He missed me I guess. He is as good as a dog can be when I'm here.
I guess I build some benches in the spring. High ones. Surrounded by invisible fence.
And it's totally my fault. There are no bad dogs just bad dog owners.
With all of the damage to the bark it will be easier to decide which branches to keep. And chopping will be in order. The top 2 inches took the brunt of the doggy defoliation.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out actually.

The most recent dog attack. Crabapple that was defoliated, root pruned, and branch pruned a few weeks ago by our dog. Sent it into an early dormancy I think. We shall see.

At least your dog goes for the young ones.
And look at it this way,not many people can get their dogs to make the crucial design decisions.
And we can't blame them for these things. I need to train him to stay away from the trees is all. He goes out there with me all the time.

Mine won't touch the trees on the bench even though she can reach them easily... But It if they are on the ground they are as good as dead!

Well... at least now you don't have to wonder what the trunk looks like beneath those branches....Ouch!

Interesting thought - I wonder how many old Japanese trees have had this happen to them in the past?
Have any of them been to Kokufu? Are they now masterpieces because of the chewing?
I wonder if anyone lost their head because their dog chewed on the Shogun's prized maple?

When I bought an elm with an ugly broken off lower branch, the seller told me his dog had chewed it off - I thought he was joking!! Now I see he may very well have been serious.

Thankfully, Dr. Watson the bonsai dog only wants to chew something if it's alive and moving; gophers, raccoons, doves, cats (sorry neighbors), trash trucks, etc. As long as my trees hold still, they're safe.

Your dog is lucky he has someone that knows how dogthings work... ;)
Yeah that's annoying. Wonder why he did that? Is he a chewer? Young? Did he do it out of frustration, because you not there, or simply keeping himself busy with being a dog? Maybe he figured.. get rid of that pesky stuff that steals his time with you...?
