Mino Yatsabusa Trident Maple

First, congratulations for selection for the Nationals!!šŸ¤˜

Second, I assume the rarity of this Trident led to it's selection. I believe the image here, as shown, is somewhat below your standards. šŸ¤Ÿ

Third? Great tree!!!šŸ‘ŒšŸ‘†
Well, this is a different sort of trident maple. They have leaves with long petioles and the middle lobe of the leaf is extended. The whole tree puts on the appearance of a weeping willow rather than the typical maple. They donā€™t send out long shoots as a general rule. Instead, each bud tend to throw out a ā€œsprayā€ of about 20 leaves. Creating a dense canopy.

So, the typical structure of a Mino is very different due to their unique growth habit. They also tend to produce bulges on their branches and trunks. Areas of reverse taper, for no known reason! So instead of them being a ā€œfaultā€, those bulges are seen as being a defining Characteristic of the cultivar. They also develop a flaky, exfoliating bark. Again, Completely different than Most tridents.

Youā€™ve likely never seen one in person. Iā€™ve only seen a couple of them. Come to the National show next September and see it in person. I think youā€™ll have an entirely different impression!

I recently found someone selling small A.b. 'Mino Yatsubusa', but passed due to their ...interesting habits. I'm sure this one will display well. Is it reasonable to think there'll be much difference in appearance by show time?

Bet it has leaves by then.

A lot of leaves. @Adair M , do you thin out the leaves like people do Japanese that have extremely tight internodes? I notice leaves in spring tend to be fatter than ones in hot drier weather, stringy. I like the fatter leaves.

No, not this one. I pretty much let it do itā€™s thing. It might produce a few extended shoots here and there. Thereā€™s usually no harm in letting them go, and then cutting back at the end of the season.

While back ago, as I was admiring my Miyasama Yatsubusa, I came across a picture of Mino Yatsubusa, and fell in love with the leaves :D :D ... So to make a long story short, I purchased a tiny twig and planted in my backyard. So over few years, it became a crazy mess, so this Spring I decided to cleanup a little and let it grow like a weeping Japanese Maple. I might get a Air Layer and work on my original intent (to make a Mino Bonsai, maybe closer to the one you have. Beautiful (Love to see if you have a picture when the leaves are colorful!
