Winter Bonsai 2023, Kannapolis, NC (just outside of Charlotte) December 2 & 3, 2023

It was a great Show, I flew up from Palm Beach County and stayed with my best friend who moved back to Corcord not far from where he was born. There was so much Talent there when I got back home I cut the overgrown branches half way on all the 50+ Bald Cypress I've collected in years past. The small Bald Cypress that is completely dead in it's center and is sprouting up several new uprights from around the base made me realize that I just gave away an almost exact tree, completely dead to just above the ground, I will show my friend the photo. There were some outrageous deals there late Sunday afternoon, I bought two JBPs that will become shohin in the near future for cheap, 60% off late Sunday! My friend bought a massive 75 year old Elm with microscopic sized leaves, I mean tiny ,1/16" max., the name escapes me now I was wondering if it will survive in Zone 9 or 10? I also got to meet the Bonsai Nut himself! I just got the Hold Harmless papers to go on the Adam's Ranch Dig next month an all day dig on a 58,000 ranch west of Ft Pierce, can't wait

Millard you are on a whole other level. I seemed to have missed the deals, but I was only there Sunday morning. How do you get invited to a dig like that?

Some beautiful trees there! And I love the venue and display.

I'm curious, Is the Winter Silhouette Show a juried show? I've always assumed it was but never looked into it.

I believe it is. There were several trees marked best in class or best in show

Thanks. :)
I actually meant, 'is there a selection process to get trees in?'. It doesn't seem to be a huge show so I would almost think there has to be.

A Terrific Show, Lots of good deals, many World Class Display Trees. I flew in from southern Palm Beach County and stayed with my best friend and his family. He was born and raised in Concord and recently moved back from Fla and bought a home in Concord, so we hit the best local restaurants and BBQ. We hit the show both days from noon til closing, I picked up some killer deals as the vendors were starting to pack up Sunday, a $150 and $75 JBPs for $50 each, a Sonny Boggs pot, and a large free form heavy grey slab pot with torn edges. The larger JBP from Connecticut appears to have been grown in 1/4" crushed limestone, gotta drop a piece in acid and see if it foams, most pines prefer acid not alkaline soil. I had to remove the sacrificial leader to fit it into my carry-on luggage. My buddy Phil bought a 75 yr old Sijou Elm with tiny tiny leaves and a 3" trunk, it appears that this tree will airlayer easy as it was putting out roots under wet moss in a branch crotch. I have both JBPs re-potted into an inorganic bonsai soil and wired both just right, now in filtered sun letting both acclimate to Zone 10. This show was as good as the Bonsai Societies of Florida Memorial Week Show in Orlando where my girlfriend and I sell my stoneware bonsai containers. I sent in my application for vendor and display for 2024. I also got to meet the head "Bonsai Nut'. We hit a bonsai nursery where Phil works part-time , some really nice Dwarf Kingsville Boxwoods field grown. Also visited my Cousins in Meisenhiemer 30 miles east, good to see family! When returning to Fla I went back to Concord Regional Airport, from 6pm to 7:15 I was the only person there -Empty, kind of spooky, I thought Andy Griffin, Aunt Bea, and Gomer were gonna come by! My 3rd time on a plane, I finished a liter bottle of water at 37000 ft and screwed the top back on, when we landed in looked like it had been run over by a truck, FLAT!

Nice to meet you! I was so excited talking with folks and enjoying the sights in the limited time frame that I had that I didn't even buy anything. I told myself after last year to plan ahead and buy more pots for spring.
