Who are the BNut moderators?

"Bonsai Nut" is the the administrator and "Si Nguyen" is the only mod I know.

I was wondering the same thing for quite some time. We could use a few hands to keep us on topic, manage threads, enforce rules, put out fires. That sort of thing. Not complaining, but it'd make Bnut better.

I was asked if I wanted to be a Mod once but I already have a full time job and I dont need the headache.

The place has a rep for being a bit like the wild west and people have gotten used to that atmosphere.
I think if we had people become mods, there would be alot of people that would get mad and leave when their posts got censored.

Somewhere along the line there was some sort of statement from B'Nut explaining the Moderator situation for this forum. It might have been a Thread.

Anyway, this is a self moderated forum, at least as I recall what I thought I read.

I think this is the beauty, and issue with BonsaiNut. We are all responsible for our own behavior; the inmates are running the asylum.

Regards,
Martin

We do have some lively debates, don't we?

No, this was to changing the name of the Vance Wood post I started so it's easier to find in the future.

LOL...that sounds like a very accurate summation. :)

They work in darkness and shadow for the good of b'nutters everywhere.

They wield ultimate power with subtlety and anonymity.

They may or may not be Batman.

Unless they're planning a major change to b-nut, I would think being a moderator here would be one of the easiest jobs around...since there really is no moderating. All you'd be doing is dealing with minor issues like renaming threads, answering user questions, etc.

Yeah. Renaming, merging, killing, making stickies, etc.

If you edit the original first post...then go to the bottom where the edit button was found previously and hit the option to go advance. That will allow you to change the title of a post thread you started.

If they do add some mods, I hope it is VERY limited capacity and they are only allowed to do stuff like remove spam, and move/ delete stuff at the requests of the OP... We don't need a bunch of power hungry moderators telling us we posted someone in GD forum that should have gone in Maples, Junipers, shohin..... Who cares! Leave it where we post it unless someone ASKS it to be moved... And killing threads because a MOD thinks it is out of line can get us moving down a slippery slope real fast! Next thing you know, one little disagreement gets a Whole thread locked/ removed and loads of good info is gone!

I was a MOD for a Gamecocks forum in the past and wound up becoming quite disenfranchised with the whole process and act of discussion forum moderation. Sports is a hotly debated topic, fans of other teams show up to flame your team and next thing you know we were getting every frustrated fan being accused of being a rival fan masquerading as a real fan to stir stuff up, just because they said something negative after a loss/ bad play... In the end the forum has all but died and pretty much just the remaining mods and a couple old guard members are posting there now. They pretty much moderated themselves out of existence and I dropped out after a year or two because I didn't agree with how the whole thing was being done. Left a sour taste in my mouth for moderation in general and I speak from experience when I say it is easy to screw up a good forum by adding moderators! JMHO

Back in the Good Ol' Days when Bonsai Talk was around it was a moderated forum and it was the only forum I have ever been banned from. The people that ran that esteemed location of higher learning in bonsai became so paranoid that they thought myself and a friend of mine, Will Heath, were trying to rig an on line contest they were having. Eventually they devoured themselves as they ran out of people to ban.

re: Mods

Yes the patients are running the asylum.
Yes there are some "spirited discussions" from time to time.
Yes things are vague and scrambled sometimes.
But there are questions asked as a result of it that clarify/re-iterate info needed by someone that does not have weeks to read through years of posts looking. By the time someone has "settled" enough to attempt/study bonsai I think they have matured enough to conduct themselves as adults. Or at least that has been my observation on this forum and its member's conduct.

Why is will Heath banned from this site? (Old wounds I'm sure). I see his name from time to time...someone must have been moderating at some point...

I remember Bonsai Talk a little bit... I actually remember the switch over when that site went dead, this one popped up in it's place... But I quit posting for years! There was / is also a Bonsai chat I think, but that is something else entirely. I only ever posted there once or twice...

I also was wondering about Will Heath- I remember someone telling me he was booted from this site, saw a few Old posts on old threads here where he posted... I don't remember much about the guy but his name from old posts. I think the people who use (what I assume to be) their real names always stand out to me because I do that on pretty much all the Internet Bonsai forums I have posted on over the years. It is just easier for me to keep up with, and I try not to post obnoxious/ controversial stuff that would cause people to dislike me or have a reason look me up outside of fairy tale land/ the Internet, unless it is just to meet me and talk about trees!

It seems the trouble makers are more often people using the Internet anonymity to it's fullest and hiding behind some funky screen name. Bonsai is not such a hate- breeding subject as say politics or sports. I always use an assumed name on a sports forum because it is fun to talk smack and red necks around my area have been known to get down right lethal over sports arguments!

Aside over- so, yeah mods= bad stuff in my experience. Too many ruin a forum, too few and Spam ruins it. You just need one or two guys running a site who can check in often enough to clean some trash up, eliminate obvious trouble and make sure the servers are working and the bills are paid. Sounds easy, but I know it is not and that is why I appreciate this forum so much! B- nut does a great job here, it runs fantastic, very little troll action, some spam but not a lot, no lag, no glitches. Why fix it if it ain't broke?
