When you die, what will become of your trees? Curious who's got this planned!

Ridiculous statement. My collection of trees and pots is modest, but i'd wager it's still worth a couple thousand(which is way less than what some folks here have).. I guess my wife and kids being without my income should just donate it away so as not to seem greedy....

It’s “worth” a few thousand huh........how many bonsai fire sales have you seen after a death? Hobbyists collections are worth very very little.

Unfortunately more than once have i seen trees auctioned off to raise funds for a grieving widow to pay bills, funeral expenses etc...guess she should have given away years of her husbands work for free...

Since there's no local clubs, or bonsai retailers, I should instruct my wife to load my pick up
with what will fit, maybe rent a U-Haul, and road trip back to
New England Bonsai to donate and or consign out what they will.
I really liked NEB (been there 3 times I believe) and we both like New England...and the Patriots :)
Not sure if they accept donations, but should probably quarantine all specimens upon arrival in all cases.

It would be nice for some of my trees to be used in classes to teach others.

Then too...going back to the thread, what 3 BNutters would you like to spend a day with...
there are a couple here I'd like to have excel at what I just keep alive.
If @MACH5 could make my Wilsons Pink, Autumn Moon and Viridis maple trees into real bonsai,
all my losses would be negated. If @Vance Wood could take my Mughos and Golden Hinokis
that would just sweeten the deal, a lot. She'd still have to rent a U-Haul.

Wow quite a story!!! So you are telling me that many of your friends are so stupid that they have no money for burial? And their wives flog off their trees within a few days of death to pay for burial???

So interesting

Daaaang someone’s had one too many Fosters. ?

I'm afraid you didn't read me right. The club angle works poorly. I've seen it over and over, people do not respond quickly enough and trees are lost. In fact, the arrangement has been made. I'm not looking to break even, I'm insuring that they go to people willing to buy them from a bonsai shop. My arrangement will work because I have discussed it with my family and my vendor. One phone call and the deed is done. No volunteers needing prodding to screw-up their personal lives for the dead guy. Remember, transporting a large number of bonsai in delicate pots is no small matter. This is a guy who knows me and my stuff who sells it for a living and will make a profit on the transaction. It will be a bonus for my wife.

This all depends...If a club is active and you have members who you know well and who know what you have, it can work out very well. If you're not a "regular" and your contacts aren't very close (personally or mileage-wise) it can be harder.

I have been working with a local bonsai nursery for decades with storage, repotting and some lessons. They are my "go to" if something happens. They have great connections with the various local clubs, sell only high end material (by that I mean no sticks in pots and/or mallsai junipers, etc.) They know who would buy my trees.

However, if you don't have a DECENT bonsai vendors within, say, an hour's drive, then this option might not be the best. I have a feeling that MOST people in the U.S. don't have such a vendor within a reasonable drive.

I'm in my 30s and never thought about this until now. Most of my trees are from wild trees collected locally. It would be an interesting idea to return them to nature, possibly in the exact locations where they were collected, so that they can continue to grow as if I'd never collected them. Trees that were collected from areas that are now redeveloped could be planted on my grave or if I'm cremated my ashes could be placed under the tree before being planted. I imagine a small plaque next to a full size tree in 100 years with my name and a picture of the bonsai it once was. Just an idea. Probably won't happen.

Make a bunch of money and you can stipulate anything you want.

My lion king post was kind of a joke obviously, but was based on me having this same thought actually. Would be an artistic statement in itself and on some level could be seen as thanking the tree for it’s service as bonsai and letting it grow freely again.

I am 43 and i have no idea. I will leave this question for, lets say, 80 +.

At some point in the next half a dozen years I'm going to move to a different continent and the trees can't come with me so I already have come to terms with losing whatever I do have. Maybe by then I'd actually have a tree that someone may want, if so I'd sell them on. If not plant them out or give try and barter on a local gardening page.
Once that has happened then I'll think about it a bit more seriously otherwise it is up to the family to do whatever they are comfortable doing.

ou could always just send them into space

thumbs up to the person who decided to send a tree into space, and thought, what the hell why not send a kusamono along with it.

...but somebody didn't trust their wiring skills to send the pot along with it...

I love my wife more than anything, but she’s horrible at watering trees, they will probably wither before I’m in the ground.

My advise to you if you care about your trees and you think you are looking that situation in the face is to take care of it before it becomes a problem. My son loves the Drunken Dragon but he has no clue how to take care of this tree so I am going to be looking at similar problems.
All of my trees are coming to you.

I don't have this problem. Nothing I have is worthwhile. Right now I'm at the very beginning of the collecting stage so if you have things to give away, give them to me. There..... that was my shameless plug.
