Whats Going on in Smoke's Backyard?

I think you should put it in a blue pot, plant it at a 30 degree angle, cut it back to the first branch, fertilize with an organic balanced 5-5-5 fish emulsion fertilizer, all whilst hopping on your left foot at a rate of 30 hops per minute.

Why does everyone feel the need to give their "opinion" to someone with soooo much more experience? I don't get it.

Because no one is perfect and knows everything. These people might see something others failed to. Even the best can be tunnel visioned at times.

Also the person giving his/her opinion may be learning from it especially if others give him/her proper feedback. I know it works for me.

I imagine it's because it's fun to give creative input to a) see if anyone else has the same idea, and/or b) to validate their opinions. Not saying that's a bad thing -- I've caught myself doing it. :D I'm sure those aren't the only reasons, of course.

Just for the record, I wasn't trying to make fun of the other posters' suggestions in my last post. Just being silly. ;-p

By the way, this tree would totally make an awesome cascade. Maybe with some deadwood carving. . . .

Participation.... Sharing.... Etc. We all know that Al has a ton of experience. Just wanted to participate in discussion, that's all.

To build on what Dario said, I do think it's useful to novices like myself who don't have too much design experience to bounce ideas off of people like Al (or other experienced folk) to get criticism or praise so we can refine our ideas on styling.

That being said, I still think that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Now pour me another, Lloyd!

He said he's contemplating on shortening it. He also said he'd rather do it soon rather than waste another year. Clearly he can, and will make his own decision and because of his experience it will be the right decision.

I guess only certain people are allowed to give there "opinions" here.

Pretty cool Smoke, even when you don't comment on the comments, you're still stirring that pot up!!!

never thought i would gg allin and bonsai in the same sentence....unless it was ,he then took the the bonsai and stuck it in his........

Well, as I started the whole comment thing... I apologize for speaking out of turn. I would never assume to place myself above anyone here let alone Al.

Back to hiding under one of the rocks in my pots...

Clyde, watch out for those black widows! :)

No need apologize, I don't think. Al knows he's good and I'm sure you haven't hurt anyone's feelings.

I truly appreciate ALL input in a DISCUSSION forum. Without discussion good or bad, relevent or not, newbie or seasoned veteran it is all welcomed by me. It is truly boring when no one has anything to say. I read plenty of forums that sometimes never have one post all day. What a waste.

What I do find fascinateing sometimes is why people do things. I mean what reason does one have for chopping a tree back. Is the choice arbitrary, or is there a plan that has not been shared.

What if I were to make a longer cut at the top and try to retain some of the movement I do have?

I think that's one section too low, but gets rid of the knob.

The maple that I cut down is really growing fast. Branches are popping out all over. Will wire this one on the fourth.
