Whats Going on in Smoke's Backyard?

Checked out a few things in the backyard and found this semi cascade elm starting to push forth. I really like the way this has developed. From cut off root.
This tree has lots of harmony. It sings to me.

Going on vacation next week and so I have to group all the trees together under the automatic watering for the week. I hate having to rely on the system but my wife needs a vacation and so do I.

As I move the trees around in the 102 degree heat I am pruning them. Most of these have not been pruned all summer, and some have to retain shape like the pyracantha.

This is actually the third pruning for these shohin elms this summer. I am going to sell these this winter on ebay cause I am tired of pruning them.

This is the pyracantha I dug out last year at a commercial building.
It needs to be moved to the watering area and it is in a large pot. 24 inches across and weighs about 65 pounds with tree and soil. I was not going to move it with a six foot long sacrifice branch on two apexes. I cut them off. They were ready to come off any way. The leader is about 3/4 inch now so the next phase of taper can start the rest of the suimmer. Trunk is about 11 inches across

Pruned this semi cascade maple.

On Frokensteen, this spring I added three seedlings into the built up trunk area to help fill in voids in the three connected trunks. The trident being held by the piece of pencil was smaller than the pencil when I put it in there. It is just now starting to mate with the other trunks.

Wow, looking good. I have some rooted arakawa JM seedlings that this would work great on as the roots would cork up as well. Excellent work!

I know you mentioned ebay. . . but I would most definatley be interested in one of these little guys. I have exclusivley conifers(minus some williow and alder cuttings I have in the ground, growing really well actually) I'm extremely interested in getting an elm and would like to start small. When the time comes I would be more than happy to pay you top dollar for 1 or 2 of those elms

Looking good...have a great vacation, you and Mrs. K certainly deserve some R&R after the year you've had.

Nice to see you had found a bit of time to enjoy your plants this year. Have an even better time on Vacation - You both deserve it!

Took some time today to give some plants a little time at the barber.

These are still in baskets and will need to be there for a couple more years. A couple may go into a pot this spring. A couple tridents are really moving along. Only working on these two years from stumps.

The tall thin Foemina juniper is my oldest tree. That tree is 30 years in a pot. Second tree I bought. The tree was about 8 feet tall when I bought it. It still looks like it did 29 years ago.

Thanks for the updates Al. The tridents look good only 2 years on, which of course is not surprising. The juniper you've had in training the longest looks quite natural and quite good I think.
