Potted up my sassafras tree.
Transplanted about 2 years ago in the ground.
My first ever sussesful transplant for sassafras. Now to see if it survives potting.

. . . inspired me to finally transition my yamadori sassafras into bonsai soil. I’ve read several comments across the interwebs indicating that sassafras do not take well to the bonsai process. Hopefully, one of us has success.

Looked in the cold frame yesterday and saw some of the trees showing signs of waking up. Some pines with swelling buds and chojubai starting to bud.
Today its rainy and cold so I finally decided to organize my bonsai pots instead of having them stacked inside each other in 3 corners of my basement.
Got most of my pots stacked. Now mainly little/tiny pots need to be shelved. Need to get another shelf unit to match the one I have.
Now I can finally see what I have for pots all in one place, so nice.

Also did an inventory on aluminum and copper wire to see if I need any soon.

Miyasama Trident repot in Seizan pot, quite deep for vigour, after a season or two in a pond basket on the ground decided to pot up again - the wounds don't seem to be healing any faster and i can work on it more easily - this one's an ugly duckling but the strange trunk hollow is growing on me for some reason. l'll let it do its thing. Love a nice clean flat root ball!

I dug up a hill yesterday and slightly cleaning up my mess today. I am building a retaining wall to level my front yard (or at least reduce the slope substantially.) My benches and growbeds will be on the newly flattened yard.

I didn't make as much progress on it as I had hoped for this weekend. I couldn't get to landscape supply, so progress will have to be made next weekend.DSC_1708.JPGDSC_1709.JPG

Felt a little froggy after potting the sassafras so, I leaped into potting up this pitch pine. Probably should’ve waited until I built up some more strength in the tree but, I wasn’t really in love with this one to begin with. If it makes it, it makes it . . . if not, I won’t weep too long.

Starting at the top, 2nd day of cleaning and a bit of thinning. Possibly a Lynns Golden hinoki, expresses 3 distinct colours now adding cream during the growing season. It has a nice branch structure looking from underneath.
Nails on the lighweight Chinese lotus pot are coming off.

I tried to plan a hike tomorrow in Olympic NF. This time of year, the weather and snowline is very variable so it's best to chat with a ranger at the office (and hey, while you're there, you can pick up a collecting permit. 20 plants, good for a full year!)

Unfortunately, the crisis state of our nation had other plans; the headquarters used to be open 6 days a week, as did several of the ranger stations. Perhaps I should plan something other than a hike, eh?

Korean Hornbeam repotted into Ikko pot.

Repot was more difficult than expected, hope it'll be ok with the aggressive root reduction, I read they can be a bit sensitive - imported from JP last year it was totally rootbound and with very wet, muddy core and thick, woody roots. Decided to go the whole hog and remove lots of crossing roots from the front of the nebari. Lots of healing due now, some more branch work later in the year.

Some bonus cheeky early airlayers on Deshojo and Crabapple because I'm impatient 😃

Butchered one of the $1.88 Christmas clearance Chamaecyparis Ellwoodii's. Don't bother telling me the wiring sucks, I am quite aware. I don't wire much, using mostly clip and grow for my tropicals. All three had multiple trunks, so no great candidates but I was bored. cypress before.jpgcypress scraps.jpgcypress butchered.jpg
