Preparing for winter, potting up the Prunus mume cuttings. Three flats roughly 150 overall. Better results to the root structure in finer propagation mix of 50/50 pumice and akadama. A sample of the roots below. Cuttings taken late spring after leaves hardened off. Best results with thicker cuttings. All were left with two leaves, 6-7 inch sections and cut just below a pair of buds.
They will go in the greenhouse for protection this year and will be sold at the end of the next growing season. I like to develop them a bit stronger before parting with them. The first few years I held back material to ensure that I would have lots of stock to develop and propagate. If others are considering cuttings I strongly suggest deeper flats, finer propagation mix and plenty of moisture. ( assuming excellent drainage ) I use the deeper Anderson flats with a larger pumice drainage layer undertake mix. Only two to three particles of depth in the drainage layer though.
