It was about time to move my Szechuan and Sansho Peppercorns from the nursery dirt into a proper medium. Their health was surprisingly good despite the fact im doing a lot of guess work, I have yet to find any solid resources that outline handling them as bonsai. (PLEASE direct me to it if you know of any)

I also decided to make some minute adjustments to the mixed forest made from their cuttings, im hoping within the next 1-2 years their root masses will fuse.

Sifted a bucket of soil.
Repotted this JWP from an Anderson flat to a bonsai training pot. Its probably 2 years overdue for this reduction.

Cut back some branches to other branches inside that are strong enough to take over.

Ends of branches need to be wired down again

Planted some chestnuts...
View attachment 537442
I did that a few years ago, now I have 50 little chestnut trees. If the squirrels leave yours alone long enough to grow, remove what’s left of the chestnut come fall and the squirrels won’t dig them up next spring looking for the nut. 😉

Repot!!!

Repotted a trident maple clump I put together last spring. I realized early summer that the small pond basket it was in was too small and added the whole thing to a bigger pond basket. By the end of summer, it had grown out the bottom of the big pond basket right into my bench.

The wire I used to hold them together was almost completely swallowed. Only a couple small roots grew above the wire... hopefully leaving the wire in doesn't have a negative long term impact on the composition.

I was fairly conservative with root cutback since they're not completely fused yet. I removed some crossing roots, a few that were higher than the rest, and some large downward growing roots.

Mostly azalea work today, with late maple pruning tossed in.

Repotted this Kogane Nishiki. It’s a chunky one! Mossing first thing tomorrow.
IMG_1137.jpeg

Also dug up 10 azaleas, moved four to new homes. The other six will find new homes in pots or get rotated tomorrow.

After three years planted atop clay soil all have awesome set up nebari. Top hamper of all will need lots of work in the future.

In between these jobs, pruned five maples.

Cheers

I put a bit of wire on this ‘Kojo no mai’ cherry after seeing the cherries up at the University of Washington. Okay, I mostly just saw the ridiculous crowd and steered clear, as I’d already been three times this season, but it’s a fun image.

I also sifted about 30 gallons of pumice, but didn’t take a second sifting pic this week.

Yesterday, but I worked on improving the the herb garden.
IMG_20240331_112739_677.jpg
There was weed barrier underneath. I tried the past couple years to work with it - most annual herbs are shallow rooting, right? Nah, wasn't working, so I dug it all up.

So I should be good on parsley, got a tarragon planted, and seeded two types of basil, lettuce, Chard, and cilantro.

Yeah, yeah, not bonsai related, but spring has been slow in coming, except for my choke cherry. Need to do something with that.

I decided to tackle this ficus last night before bed. @wavy Gaby had given me a pot several months ago. It needed another drain hole drilled and the feet leveled…nothing a diamond bit couldn’t handle. This tree was the top of a malsai I air layered off. It has taken a while to get here but it finally got a real pot.
