What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Yes it is, hence an air layering project.
Ok, I thought you meant as air layers like for propagation/sell. Cool, I am about to start a ground layer on my trident... as much as I want to do it, I am not looking forward to the work involved.

You never know when you’re going to need a bat scroll for a display 😁. Seriously always looking for a good kakemono. Bats are good luck symbols as well as symbols for seasonal changes summer/fall.

Doing a bit of that as well 😂. Since the upper branches are all coming off anyway, might as well try and make more! Once I remove all these, I will ground layer off the best piece 💪

probably getting in over my head with this one, but it was just so tempting I picked up this sunset Manzanita today, and have spent a good chunk of the afternoon reading about them. it definitely seems like it's gonna be a task, but might avoid the repotting issue with ground layers? I dunno, it's all brainstorming at this point.

bonsaijack inorganic substrate. seems they're about to switch to this gritty mix.

Interesting, that is the mix I use minus the pine bark. Works fine for almost everything I have. I'll probably continue to buy either a custom mix of 50/50 monto-bonsai block or buy both separately and mix them here. Not a fan of adding bark fines to my mix. While it may retain more water, it is easier to remove full inorganic material than bark pieces where roots may grow through.

Went into Home Depot the other day with zero intention of buying plants—and of course, I walked out with a Japanese holly ‘Helleri’ for $9. It had two separate plants crammed into one container. The roots were super bound up—took a while to tease them apart. I ended up removing about 80% of the roots just to get them separated cleanly.
The smaller one had nicer movement and a better curve, so I potted in bonsai soil and wired a little. The other went into a 3-gallon for now. I pruned them a little, but not too crazy. Curious to see if they survive the root massacre. Ilex Crenata #IlexcrenataIMG_6202.jpeg

A Chapin inline sprayer so I can easily use miracle gro again.

Have you tried it before? I used the MiracleGro and the Ortho inline sprayers and they sucked for bonsai trees. Too much flow. Great for landscape and trees. I think their inline liquid feeder with a watering wand would work better. When I was at the apartment I used a 5 gal bucket to dissolve the Miraclegro and then sprayed it on the soil with a cheap battery transfer pump.

yeah, i think those inline sprayers suck, too. i use a big trash can and a submersible shallow-well, greaseless pump from homedepot. extension cord for the pump. disconnect regular watering hose and attach to pump to use your regular watering wand.

Just tried it inline to my sprinkler system and it blew out miracle grow solution all around the o ring. It sucks…. Going back to Amazon lol
