What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Happen to grab that off Bonsai Outlet? I see they have a new batch from Gerald Rainville:

I'm liking this guy...
Nice! I was at New England Bonsai the night Gerald brought in his huge shipment of trees. There were a lot of awesome little black pines. I’ll regret it, but buying one just wasn’t in the budget.

Besides the great trees, Gerald was an awesome guy. A real wealth of knowledge and very friendly.

Sure did! I was looking at that one too😂 but promised the Mrs. I wouldn’t go too crazy and ended up with this one. Got some wire bite I need to take care of today and hopefully style it back into something less bushyIMG_1761.jpeg

Another JM labeled as Atropurpureum.
Not saying it's anything too special, but it certainly presents some striking differences in leaf color, size and internode length. New one is to the left of typical Atropurpureum.

Will practice airlayering on it next year.
Good candidates for practice!

Cold frame accessories.

Question: if I am making a 4' by 8' cold frame - how long of a heating cable would you use?

I got a 30' length, thinking I'd lay it back and forth 3 times lengthwise - but I'm thinking maybe that's not enough?

It will also be against the house, so should get some heat from that.

I wouldnt use any heat source in the cold frame.
I dont have one in mine. I just cover it when it gets below freezing.

It's a cold frame so why would you use any kind of heater?

Fine, I'll call it a "slightly less cold frame."

I have some Japanese maples for the first time that are on the edge of my zone.

I'm in Maine, I don't think a regular cold frame will stay in the temperature ranges I'll need. I don't have a garage or other structure to use.

It's not like I'm planning on heating this thing to 80°... Maybe 40° at the roots; still researching.
