What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Did it backbud?
I actually had a short thread started on it. 2015, meaning I was 2 years into bonsai. I commented that "it took abuse" and "was shaping up", but my cow dog ate it. Didnt write anything else that is useful. If I remember correctly I had removed about 40 percent of the foliage, and some tips turned brown after. But it survived it just fine. Maybe crotch backbuds if anything.

The fact theyre sold in a perfect cylindrical shape leads me to believe there are techniques to train them, and they respond well, its a matter of figuring it out.

It's Christmas time so the stores are selling these Cupressus macrocarpa 'Wilma'/ Wilma Monterey cypress retailers call Lemon Cypress. They have tiny foliage and I have always wondered if they would make good bonsai. I'm going to find out.

I haven't looked inside, but it has some modest wood so I will make it whatever size the wood inside there supports. I don't buy stock to grow into bonsai, I make bonsai out of the size I buy and then then they mature into what the species will, and given that, I will wire the branches and trim back to where the foliage has to start so that it will finish at some shape that will be believable. Sometimes it works, and sometimes....

I looked around trying to find examples of these as bonsai and found zero that I would condescend to call starters. There were some that others thought were "bonsai", but we all know how abused the term is. We shall see what this critter looks like when I butcher it back to something approximating a starting point. I need your prayers.

Anyone with experience or advice should pipe up.
I’m sure the care you give it will be good.
Ive had a couple, and butchered both.
Removed at least 50% foliage on the first go around + repotted. ☹️
They both dried out and where crispy critters after a month.
They do like open soil, but require frequent watering!
Since they are not hardy here, I had to keep them indoors -also Christmas season purchases- I don’t think they cared for the dry air either.
Im sure you’ll do better than I. ☺️

Just expanded my cold frame so I can get more trees out of the garage and into that for the winter.
So purchased cement blocks. Also decided to replace the 3/8 plywood I had been using for covers because even though I paint them, they still get wet and delaminate.
I replaced them with PVC sheet meant for outdoor use. They are a bit more expensive than plywood but I shouldnt have to replace them in 3-4 years and I dont have to paint them.

A few weeks ago a bonsainut passed away. Today was the sell-off of his trees. only 6 people showed up. Such a sad situation. I brought 2 trees and 3 pots home. Not nearly enough to empty out a shed of pots, and 300 LARGE trees. But my car was full.

I just purchased a starter Ulmus Minor from Yannick too. Now it's time to stop buying trees.... (I also said that 1 hour before I bought this one...)
Well, that lasted long. Just bought 2 new starter trees at Danny Use's Bonsai Center Ginkgo....

A Juniperus Sargentii from his growing fields.

And a Quercus Faginea (Portuguese Oak) yamadori.

Last tree purchase of the year, I promise... Kuma Shide Japanese Hornbeam.

This soil sifter. Funny: When I first saw these I thought they'd be made like the springform pan I use for cheesecake. Fortunately what I received is of much sturdier construction.

I hesitate to post too many pictures because they are so bad, but this is a maple I acquired a few weeks ago. It is actually my second to last bonsai purchase of the year. The pine was my last. It is possible that I will end up buying some pots between now and Dec. 31 so there may be more "last purchases of the year."
This is an air layer that Steve at Plant City acquired and passed on to me. The tree has some flaws but is nicer than the picture and has potential. It is ready for a nicer pot in the spring.
