I collected this grape vine about a month ago from a fence demo project in my yard. There weren't really any feeder roots, just big , structural roots. There were a few branches that didn't make it, leaving me with just a decently tapered trunk. This is it today after a severe pruning to get rid of deformed foliage. I suspect the vine had gotten a dose of Roundup along the way. The new, tender foliage seems to be healthier and better looking. I love the craggy bark.

Are you going to let it sprawl all year? I lost five nice size trunks I dug when clearing space in the yard. Not sure why... but I thought the container was not wide enough, or not letting grow out fully first year.
Have you found any resources on best practices for keeping grapevine alive in container?

I pinched the top back to stimulate the lower branches which really worked. I didn't really research it much. I've collected approx. 200 trees from the wild and urban areas encompassing about 30+ species and cultivars and I've developed a pretty good feel for what a plant needs. I'm a "feel" person rather than a "numbers" person. Can I tell you factually what works? No. Can I give you a pretty good guess as to what might work. Yes.

No other wire on the tree yet. All the shoots want to go straight up, so I GENTLY bend them downward a bit every day. It's a procedure I use on all of my trees and it cuts down greatly on wiring.

I’m curious to see your long term suggestion. I’ve got access to a few old grape vine trunks that will need to be removed in coming years and am very interested

I'm curious too!! At this point, I have some kind of vague idea what the future holds. Apex possibly a bit below the third leaf from the top. Maybe a gently flowing triangle shape........ nothing too severe. We'll see. This is less than 2 months from a stump and we have 3 or 4 good growing months left down here.
