Upcoming Cold for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

@StoneCloud ... jeep had thermostat replaced...and the next day I found myself sitting along the main road. Thankful it didn't run hot on the back road in which I came. No cell...had me knocking at a door less than 1/4 mile from mechanics. Was about to pick up the son's car. So mechanic came up with son's car...and I left my jeep keys. He was able to stop clutch fan with his hand. So replaced that...and a sensor...and is guessing my head gasket is going...so will be looking for a new jeep for me...gently used. (((Sigh)))

Been having a 2 week flu battle, in and out of the plant room every 48 hours to water and tend. Over the weekend the electric supplement heater went nuts for what must of been close to two days, close to 100F in there when discovered  Lost more then I want to talk about but new heater is on the way - I guess Spring will bring more plant shopping - ARGH!

That flu is nasty...had it here. Sorry about your loss...maybe a thermometer with an alarm for there as well?

Yes and no, I was not doing anything but normal, not daily needed overseeing - flu had me and was not an option. I have monitors in three places and never really looked at them for several days. So be it, I know how to grow and will continue to :)

The new backup heater is far more accurate and until this crazy Winter not needed to be delivered and setup tomorrow - just a combination of problems unforeseen. On a bright note I managed to keep several Satsuki in great condition moving them earlier and everything outdoors is just fine :)

As is -

Love the sensor push. I have the G1 WIFI Gateway, too, so I can keep tabs on my trees from anywhere. A bit "spendy" for initial outlay (each sensor is about $50), but the data on temp and humidity are valuable and it captures data every minute or two. Beats those crappy sensors from La Crosse, which only capture peak highs and lows. Really nice to see when those peaks occur and how long those dangerous temps persist. I have one on the top shelf, middle shelf, and garage floor.

Although I did annotate the data below with an arrow indicating when I installed a thermostat on my garage 'cold frame' heater, it's pretty to easy to see how a good thermostat can help manage the swings.

Very cool...so this would run say...on WiFi connections? My husband keeps saying he wants to get me a better set up.

yep, G1 WIFI Gateway connects to your home network. Access from anywhere. Very slick.

if you don't have (or want) the Gateway, you can still connect to sensors via bluetooth... just need to be within range (at home).

You can connect to an unlimited numbers of sensors, too, so you can monitor all shelves, levels, spaces, etc... within your overwintering area.

current conditions... all within suitable temps and humidity ranges!

They are very cool. Technology originally devised to monitor the storage conditions of high-dollar musical instruments and cigars, I think, but they work quite well for our application.

The only limitation, as far as I can tell, is that the sensors are not designed to be directly subjected to weather (rain and snow), so their utility for monitoring outdoor weather may be relatively limited (unless you stick them in a place protected from direct rain and snowfall).

Butlearn did an excellent job describing ‘SensorPush’. You can also set up alarms, I.e. you get a pop-up on the device you’ve installed the app on that say’s temperature has exceeded “x”, or is less than “Y”.

quite right... when the traces fall into the "red" zone, as depicted by the plots changing from green to red in the picture in my earlier post (temps that exceed my pre-designated safe sone) I get an alarm on my phone. I can then call my house or a bonsai friend to check on the situation.

Oh no! So sorry to hear! I know they can be quirky but this is crazy. Thank god you were near to people and close to the mechanic and his son. They are really good people from what I've seen.

I'm glad to hear you are ok though.

Damn! Wish I could send you a jeep :D

Oh and more snow here late tonight and tomorrow. It's gonna be less than six inches and it's hilarious seeing the the weather warnings.

Granted icey roads are no fun........well sometimes they can be fun :p:p

But to me anything less than 24 inches of snow is really nothing that serious, just an inconvenience.

My tropical room's secondary heater died. We had ice coming in Friday. School was on an early dismissal. The hubs grabbed our son and was late getting home. (I know the distance and time from school home) here...he picked me up a heater for the tropicals. Not that I have many...before coming home. We had a lot of ice...back roads are still a mess. We are on another snow day...today over the ice on back roads. I don't do ice...can't even walk because of the thick layer out there. We have had snow since...but I just don't want to fall.

I am pretty much over winter...but as I glance out a window...I remind myself my dormant trees NEED this cold winter. Giving my rational side...that we need winter. The hubs shovels a path...only once did my door freeze from the ice storm that we got. In which I put my back to the door and kicked behind me to loosen that hold of ice.

We still have almost 2' of snow, atop the little ice we got. I'd rather have the snow any day. Looks like it'll get messy over the weekend, it's going to rain! UGH.

My aussies are loving the snow, it's really nice fluffy stuff.
