Upcoming Cold for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

3 more subhuman days left then forecast to get back to normal for a bit. Yay for 30s again!

We flew to Florida in Nov. I rented a Mustang convertible for the drive to the keys. It was black on black and I thought we'd be miserable in the hot sun.
It had cooled seats as well as heated. Felt like I wet my pants when I first sat down but how awesome in the hot sun!

Register it as a CLASSIC next year!!!!!

Wonder how that works with insurance, perhaps worth looking in to. I doubt the plate itself is a lot more.

Yea the insurance should be cheaper, I think there is a yearly mileage limit (which makes sense) but seems like you won't have a problem with that. You've got less miles than some 2 year old cars!

9 degrees this morning and we ended up with about a foot of snow after everything was done. Back to work today. I hope the mailman is back in action as well. I got JBP seeds to plant and am waiting on soil packages!

I think we are in store for a January thaw on the way!
Starting soon an after the second week of January a longer more substantial thaw possibly.

Gotta get through Xtreme cold first starting tonight!

I know, kinda hard to make out what the pic is about but stuff outside are all under a bunch of snow I shoveled on. The leafy stuff are Privet, Azalea, and Cryptomeria. Will find out if Azaleas can survive a few nights in sub zero temps w/ snow as insulation.

But I'm worried for my Cryptomeria. Is it already dead? I thought it grew quite well over the summer. New buds where popping everywhere too. The ones at the nursery already turned bronze when I was there beginning of winter. This one (left side of pic) is still mostly green, or greenish. I hope this guy makes it through.

Been pretty cold here 13 outside this morning and 24 right now.

Steady 29 in the garage where the trees are.

Monday though is bringing high 50s and mid 30's at night.

My yaupon rootball is frozen but doing great, the junipers are just fine and I just picked up a crenata yesterday all fine.

Has anybody considered offering their trees (or even just certain trees) extra protection? My current winter setup was put together hastily due to life keeping me preoccupied with other pursuits and would really only cut it in the mildest winters, which I figured would have to be enough, until it isn't...and now it isn't. I am considering putting additional mulch over the hardy deciduous stuff and putting marginals like trident maples in the garage. I would rather keep everything hard frozen outside than wimped out in the garage, but I know they won't die in the garage at temperatures 20F-45F, as outdoor temperatures stay between 5F-32F for an entire 10 day stretch. Could a very fully dormant trident or JM tolerate that kind of cold without damage?

Let's talk COLD bonsai.
My protection is 2 feet of snow in -10f weather... i prolly couldn't add protection if i wanted to.
No offense, but i think it's funny when people worry about 8-25F being cold. :D
This warm front is suppose to melt some snow though, might get up to 41f! Swimwear time i think!

I hate freaky weather lol. High 50's this week and on friday 71!:mad:

I love the cold and agree that anything above 0 F is not crazy cold. However I will say that I did lose some of my cold blood living in Fl for a few years. damn shame too...so I've been going outside half dressed to Re-acclimate my panzy ass :p

my recent move has had me thinking how long trees take to acclimate. And how serious is zone schock (assuming the tree is still being moved to a location within it's zone) ?

Yeah, it has been C-O-L-D.

It was -1 F (without the wind chill) at Dulles International Saturday night. The thermometer at my house read 6 F that morning. It hasn't been above freezing since Christmas...Long time under 32, hell under 20...I am sure I've lost some trees. Spring will most likely bring heartache, but still have fingers crossed.

Well the worst is over it seems. Now we are faced with the dee-lite-ful prospect of waiting long months until spring to see if everything survived.

After 15 straight days (well) below freezing and at least 2 nights below 0 F, we briefly went into the mid 40s today. A lot of the 1" of snow on the ground stuck around since the ground is super cold. Before I moved up here, the last 2 week's weather is actually what I expected the winter up here to be like. Come to find out, the recent weather was actually quite unusual (for the duration of extreme cold at least).

I took the trees in the shed out yesterday and everything appears to be just fine. Only loss was my crappy little Mikawa JBP that was one of the ones I protected in the shed. I was planning on putting it in the landscape anyways, and finding better JBP material for bonsai.
