Ulmus campestre/European field Elm

this one has been rampant, today i had to remove all the wire
20190421_173944.jpg

still in the process of growing out the lower left side, the tree has been positioned so the area gets all the sun, but the whole tree is pretty well balanced now in terms of vigour.

last images before it becomes a bush.... this is another that will get the hedge treatment later in season.
its had defoliation carried out in the past and removal of large leaves.
think its at a point now where it can just be sheared back at the right times.

i can see now also that the negative gap in the crown, at the front also needs filling in, that will be easy.

Another incredible tree from Bobby Lane. I love the chop as opposed to the original photo. Makes the tree much more powerful. And that pot matches the bark nicely.

cheers mate, the 'chop' was actually prompted by the tip of the old apex dying off. i agree i think its for the better and was left with a more powerful image.

@thumblessprimate1 asked me for an update on this one, its doin great.
i feel the leaf size is starting to reduce now

Some improvement in the winter image, getting denser, i havnt had to do as much thinning as i did last time it was naked.
i got the thickening i wanted in the low left branch....thats just been snipped back to a small shoot for tapering20191115_133043.jpg20191113_173653.jpg

@BobbyLane amazing tree mate! I’m guessing this is one you’re going to hang on to for a bit and not like some you do, develop a little and pass them on.

... very british ...
'Reminds me of developing-style of Potter, Baddeley, Harrington e.t.c. ...
Please take that as praise, mate ...
Nice tree, and an interresting develo.-docu. ! ...

thanks mate and i take this praise as a big compliment, ive been an admirer of their work since the beginning of my journey.

Cheers mate this is defo a keeper, its my longest standing elm now. i know it looks like i sell a lot but i do have my favourites and this is a favourite. i sell a lot of hornbeams because they are so readily available, but i have a couple of keepers there too. i would like to get my balcony down to a handful of trees that can be shown one day. ive kind of gone off smaller bits like shohin i prefer 14inches up.

The last couple years ive been focusing on getting the low left branches to thicken and fill in that area, now the plan is to let the low left area reach the edge of the pot

almost 3 weeks ago now, i gave this a cut back into older wood, to stimulate dormant/interior buds
20200507_192051.jpg

after.
20200525_152027.jpg20200525_152116.jpg

first time ive seen the tree produce a bud on some old callus around the hollow

20200525_151810.jpg

i may let that bud extend, i want to fill the two negative areas in the front of the tree with directional pruning

I thought callous tissue does not bud!

Very cool tree Bobby, love the progression.
Its beginning to look more mature with more ramification.

Cheers, well the winter image should of improved from last season, we shall see...

here is a main branch before n after. in the top image you can see dormant nodes that werent stimulated until after the cut back, the tree should begin to look denser and tighter in a few weeks and the leaf size has come right down from earlier images over the seasons.

First time seeing this thread. This is a really special tree, Bobby. Great work on it. I think it qualifies as what Walter Pall calls a "Fairy Tale Tree". It's only going to get better and better.
