Thoughts on "Nursery to Bonsai" in one sitting

Just for clarity, I’ve shared your second following video in relation to repotting or not repotting the tree at the same time, as the OP is not sure on what to do, believing that such work can kill this trees (picea), I have mentioned before in the thread that I’m in support that both can be done (late autumn to early winter) as you mentioned in the video the difference will be that the tree will take longer to respond if root work is involved although they will catch up as the roots develop.
I am willing to do it as an experiment especially that the tree has only cost me €2. I'm only going to tease the roots to untangle them and defoliate the internodes to clean up the trunk.

In my experience, you can get by with a LOT with trees in the 3/4" or less diameter range. If it's in a nursery pot, it basically has a pretty compact root ball already. Strategically pruning the root ball smaller and reducing the top ends up with a pretty well-balanced tree fairly safely. Starting with a lush and healthy tree makes the process even safer. Experimenting with cheap, healthy nursery plants is money very well spent.

The skills of designing/styling and long-term horticultural structuring are so very different. The styling work draws from the lexicon of visual arts and aesthetics, which is familiar and fun to artists. But horticultural training over long periods is often counterintuitive and doesn’t exactly tickle the brain the same way sitting down to “create art” might. The second skill is so difficult (and not easy to communicate or learn) because the window of time is uncomfortably large. It seems out of reach to beginning bonsai artists… and it’s probably difficult / bad business to make a YouTube video that spans eight to twelve years of growth 😂
